16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, December 30, 1987 Port Perry Star MoJacks settle for 3-3 draw with Cobourg The Port Perry MoJacks had to settle for a 3-3 draw with the Cobourg Cougers in a Central Junior C Hockey game played December 27 at the Scugog Arena. This was not one of the better games seen this season in Port Perry as both teams appeared slug- gish and less than sharp. In an un-eventful first period, the MoJacks got on the board first at 13:36 when Craig Menzies scored from a scramble in front of the Couger net. Dave Burnett and Clair Cornish drew the assists. With just nine seconds left in the period, Mark Sokay tied the game on a deflection past MoJack goalie Paul Goreski. There were few good scoring chances for either team in the mid- dle period with the MoJacks manag- ing ten shots and the Cougers eight. Cobourg went ahead briefly at 4:07 of the third when Ray Murphy ~ was allowed to walk in alone on ..Goreski. But at 7:27, the MoJacks evened the game at deuces as John Harman re-directed a pass from the slot. Linemates Dean Smethurst and Rob St. Jules drew the assists. At 14:02 with the MoJacks on a power play, Smethurst took a rink- wide pass at centre ice, scooted around the Couger defender on the left wing and flipped home a shot which gave the team a 3-2 lead. The MoJacks would have been happy to take the two points, but the Cougers had other plans at 17:14 when Jeff Waldie grabbed a loose puck in front of Goreski and slid a back-hand in- to the net. The MoJacks have been in a bit of a slump over the past half-dozen games. Although they have manag- ed three wins and a tie (with two defeats) their play has not been as sharp as it was earlier in the year. 9-2 WIN After losing two straight to Ux- bridge and Lakefield, the MoJacks made the long road trip to Madoc on December 22 for a game against the last place Hurricanes. Although short-staffed for this one, the players were obviously in no mood to lose another before Christmas as the team rolled to a 9-2 'win over the Hurricanes. The MoJacks jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Rob St. Jules and Craig Menzies, then broke it wide open in the mid- dle frame with five markers. Clay Dempsey and Rob St. Jules tangled with Madoc players and all received ma- jors and game misconducts. The Hurricanes took 21 minors, while the MoJack goalie Paul Goreski may have wondered where all the help went on this play as two Cougars converge on his net and the play resulted in a Cobourg goal. The MoJacks have MoJacks took 13. Three of the nine MoJack goals came on the power play. Atoms win 9-4 The Malmont Farms Atom A's snapped out of a prolonged goal shortage in a big way Monday night, scoring a 9-4 exhibition win over Uxbridge. Jay Tredway led his line with 2 goals and 1 assist, Brent Harper was 1 and 1, and Jeremy Geer counted 1 assist. Everyone contributed to the defensive play and, but for the strong individual efforts of Aaron Morrison, who scored 3 of the 4 goals; the margin of victory would have been even larger.
