18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 8, 1987 Norl Peter, an unusual life, an unusual talent Celebrated artist stops for visit To look at Nori Peter's work, one might assume she is a native Inuit. However, one of North America's most celebrated native artists hails, in fact, from Hungary, as far removed from the Arctic as downtown Toronto is from Port Perry. And yet Nori Peter's art captures the essence of Canada's native peo- ple like no other artist. Her pain- tings are heartwarming and simple portraits of traditional native scenes. Whether she sets her fingers to pastel drawings, oil paintings, ceramics or stained glass, the result is always popular among art en- thuiasts, and always in demand. One of her recent stained glass pieces, for example, sold for $47,000. Her work has been reproduced on greeting cards, calendars, and col- lector plates. She is successful with.every art medium she attempts, and has come a long way since she left Hungary with her mother in 1957. Good-natured, with a ready smile and a round, gentle face, Nori was in Port Perry Saturday December 5 to meet with her many admirers at Just Around The Corner, and to talk about her unusual life. She wanted to go overseas, but she didn't think too much of the States. Neither did her mother. By chance, they ran in- to a true fan of Canada, who wanted a relative to come to Canada as well. '""He told us what a beautiful coun- try was, and we believed him," she said. It didn't take much convincing before young Nori and her mom set sail for Canada and landed in Halifax. There, a Red Cross volunteer asked the pair what city they wanted to live in, and handed then: a list with the country's big- gest cities. As Nori, who couldn't speak a word of English, scanned the list, she came across Toronto. a name Nestleton (From page 16) Based on Matthew 16 ... he spoke on "The Inescapable Question ... who do you think Christ is?"' Once in Toronto, Nori landed a bank job--and worked there for on- ly three months. She hasn't held a "regular job' since, making her art her sole source of bread and butter. As for her English, which she speaks now with only a slight ac- cent, well, she picked that up from television! Especially commercials. She also read children's books, and before too long, was speaking English fluently. A year after she arrived in Toron- to, 29 years ago, she met up with the owners of the Whetung Gallery in Curve Lake, who were impressed both with her work and with Nori herself. They invited her up to visit, and soon she was spending all her summers on the Indian reserve. It was at Curve Lake that she found the inspiration that would make her famous. Her paintings and drawings of native Indians attracted the atten- tion of a greeting card company, that commissioned her to do hasti- notes. She found herself painting Eskimos as well, and began reading everything she could find about In- dian and Eskimo life. Soon she became known for her Eskimo portraits, when she sudden- ly realized, "I haven't seen an RAGLAN VARIETY Eskimo in my whole life. So then | really decided to go up north and see what a real Eskimo looked like she said with a grin. Through friends, she travelled to Inuvik, where she settled in, made more friends, and began painting in earnest. "This time I knew what I was do- ing," she said. And then smiled, "Now I'm in Eskimos up to my neck!" } She now tries to get up to Yellowknife every summer, and says she would love to move there permanently, "but what would I do with five dogs and four cats?" Nori shares her Curve Lake home (she now lives there, with her studio) with a collection of huskies and cats, as well as many injured birds she takes in and mends. She once shared an entire winter with a heron with a broken wing. Still, she loves it in the Arctic. "It's so beautiful," she said. Her feelings about the north are amply reflected in her work, which shows off "the land of the midnight sun' in all its natural finery. For this, she is becoming known the world over, a celebrity. She laughs at this notion. "In Curve Lake, I am famous as the lady who has five dogs and fixes the broken wings of birds." But famous, nevertheless.
