EE te ei A ea ERA IR a 2 iT Te 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 1, 1987 Random Jottings (From page 6) Personally | think it was a great idea, and there is no rea- son why it could not be used by other groups. Sometimes it is easier to raise funds if those doing the giving are getting something in return, and have fun at the same time. The Kidney Foundation, and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce found that raising money through their Sexy Men, Sexy Women contests the past couple of years was relatively simple, because people got involved and enjoyed giving the money to these worthwhile causes. Maybe more groups should try and come-up with ideas that would make the giving a little more "fun" for the public, who are being constantly asked to dip into their pockets for worthwhile causes. - CHRISTMAS SPIRIT This week the Star announces two Christmas contests, and also contains a Christmas Song Sheet flyer which an- nounces another contest sponsored by a number of local merchants. As we did last year, the Star will be sponsoring a Best Christmas Lights contest, and instead of the Christmas Pud- ding contest, there will be a Gingerbread House competi- tion. More details on both these contests are elsewhere in this issue of the paper, but if your interested entries must be in by December 10, 1987. In addition to these two competitions, a number of _I merchants have gone together to sponsor a "Best Decorat- od Door" contest. Details on this contest are in the flyer in- side this paper. Decorate your doors in the Christmas spirit Many people make it a tradition to decorate their front door every Christmas. This year, Port Perry merchants are encouraging everyone to dress up their doors, and win some prizes too, in the Door Decorating Contest. Ten prizes in total will be award- ed, one adult and one child prize for five different areas of Port Perry, including Prince Albert (Children, 15 and under; Adults, 16 and over). There may even be an additional prize for best overall home decora- tion (lights, door, lawn, roof). All prizes are supplied by local mer- chants (see flyer insert in this week's edition of the Star). Organizers are hoping to inject a little more fun in the Christmas season, to have people celebrate the joy of Christmas with others, to pro- mote fellowship within Port Perry and pride of accomplishment, as well as brightening up the whole town. Winners will be chosen on the basis of originality and style, and will be picked by a panel of local judges. The winners' names and photos will be published in the - Christmas Greetings issue of the Star, December 22nd. To enter, simply fill out the entry form on the flyer, cut it out, and mail or drop it off at one of the spon- soring businesses. Better hurry though--the contest starts today (December 1st) and closes December 18th. Last year, 35 entries were recep ed by the Star, and all were beautifully decorated. Winners were (first) Mike and Valerie Freeman Scugog Island; (second) Debbie and Mike Dell of Port Perry: (third, 3 tie) Stan Grills of Prince Albert ang Heather and Bob Smith of pgp Perry. As happened last year, this yey each entry will be judged on three points: Overall Effect (out of j possible 30 points) ; Originality (out of a possible 10 points) ; and Ingenuy;- ty (out of 10 points). Winners will be those with the highest total points. And if you're like Star staffers. who like nothing more than an even. ing drive during the holiday season. you'll enjoy checking out all the homes that are entered. We'|| publish every entry in the Christmas Greetings issue. To all who enter, good-luck. and Merry Christmas! ONE WOMAN'S VIEW by Chris Carlisle (From page 6) to be that way. If they were small, regular size, your average stunned boxer wouldn't have a clue how to put it on. It's like teaching kids to write with fat pencils. Teach the boxer how to put on his belt with the jumbo size. tablets or convalescent aids. Or instant jelly powders. Retired boxers have a good chance for a successful career, however. Think of the millions they could make promoting headache "Kids, you too can have the brain of a boxer. Just add boiling water to this powder, or is that cold water, or is it...? Well, anyway, once it's made, it's just like my championship brain." ~ Here's your chance to write a LETTER TO SANTA CLAUS, and possibly have it published in the Port Perry Star's Christmas Greetings edition. JUST SEND YOUR LETTERS TO: All letters to SANTA received before Monday, December 14, 1987 will be used in the Star's Christmas edition, and will be forwarded to the North Pole in time for Santa to see them.
