12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 24, 1987 Lions Club celebrate 50th anniversary of Charter Members of the Port Perry Li- ons Club celebrated the 50th anni- versary of their Charter Night at a banquet held at the Manchester Hall last Saturday night. Present among the guests for the speical occasion was one of the club's original Charter mem- bers, Mr. Bill Carnegie, who now lives in Oshawa. Mr. Camcgic was presented a SOth anniversary commemorative pin by Lion Guy Latriclle, and a certificate was presented to Presi- dent Alan Howell from Lions In- ternational. The Port Perry Lions Club was sponsored by the Newmarket Li- ons and received nts Charter on November 22, 1937. Two mem- bers of the present Newmarket Li- ons, Tom Barker and Les Varley were present for the evening and were recognized by the Port Perry club members. Over the past 50 years the club has had many ups and downs, with their membership dropping to as low as 12. Presently the Port Perry Lions Club has an ac- uve membership of 28 men. Onc of the highlights of the clubs years of service to the com- munity came in 1969 when Lion Storey Beare, a past president of the club was elected as the Dis- trict Governor of A3. Lion Storey was present at the anniversary banquet and as sull an active member of the club. Guest speaker for the Lions SOth anniversary was a well- known and respected Port Perry resrdent, Dr. Matthew B. Dy- mong. Dr. Dymond, a one time mem- ber off the club, said he was hon- ourcd 10 berback to speak to the club, and called himself a "renegade of Lionism™, Looking back on his career, he sand he tele that his years spent with Lionism help him through- out his career and that he was proud to have been a Lion. "This 1s a very happy occassion for your club, a ume of celebra- ton and itis natural and very hu- wig 10 look back with pride on all the wonderful things that have "happend to you and your club: to recall the things you have achieved: to recall the many ser- vices provided by you so willing- ly, so cheerfully, so sclfessly for fellow humans who needed help" he said. "You were first to help re-build a house that was lost through fire. You provided a secing-cye dog for a sightless person: a prothesis for a man who lost his arm through an accident. You gave willing and substantial support to help build our first community hospital: those arc but a very few of your good deeds." "So much for the past. We have to remember that anniversaries, though they are times when we celebrate the past, they are also for stock-taking, for thinking of the present, for committment to the future. We cannot indulge the luxury of staying too long on nostalgia lane, nor ol getting hung up on the holy past. We have of necessity 10 "Remember the Future", or as Coleridge put a long time ago, we need to remember... "that in today already walks tomorrow". Dr. Dymond went on to say that man is essentially a dreamer, but out of those dreams come the vison of what might be, and what can be. He encouraged the Club to con- tinue dreaming, as it was the dreams of their founders that made the club what itis today. In his closing remarks, Dr. Dy- mond stated that he had read in the newspaper that "Peace In The World" is the major mission of Lions as proposed by Lions Inter- national president Judge Brian Stevenson, "Awesome", he said. "That word aptly describes the job you will be tackling, but I have confidence that you will be successtul in this tremendous un- dertaking, Mr. Dymond also cluded to the fact that the international presi- dent has reported that Lions Clubs expect to have between 20 to 40 thousand female members by next July. He asked in closing, "will your club be among the pioneers™? A message ol congratulations to the Port Perry Lions Club for Scugog Township was brought to them by Councillor Yvonne Christic on behalf of the Mayor. Mrs. Christie reminisced briefly about the old Manchester Hall, and how the Christie family had used it extensively throught the years. "You are to be congratulated for the fine work and preservation you have done on the hall," she said. "Without the help and support of groups such as the Lions, our community would not be able to function," she concluded. Letters of congratulations were received from M. P. Alan Law- rence, M.P.P. Sam Curcatz and from the president of Lions Inter- national, Judge Brian Stevenson.
