Port Perry Star Port Midgets win home tournament | by Mark Barkey On Saturday November 14 the Grant Menzies Motors Eagles hosted their own tournament and competed against teams such as Ux- bridge, Stouffville and Napanee. It was a well played tourney, with the hometeam Eagles capturing the crown in the final against Napanee. Port's first contest was against their old rivals from Uxbridge and it proved to be a good game as games against Uxbridge usually are. The Eagles opened the scoring late in the first period on a goal from The Port Perry Eagles were the hosts for Port Perry hockey fans had good reason for celebration Saturday night after the Grant Men- zies Midgets trounced Napanee to win the an- nual Midget tournament, sponsored by Coalition Derek Fitzgerald with assists going to Kris Lavereau and Phil McBride. Port got a two goal jump early in the second on a goal from Mark Barkey assisted by Clair Cornish and Derek Fitzgerald. The Eagles got another one just a few seconds later on a goal by Todd Taylor assisted by Derek Fitzgerald and Clair Cornish. With just seventeen seconds left to play in the second period, Uxbridge got their first goal to cut the lead to two. Andrew Steele had a hot stick as he added two back to back goals to end the game with Brad Menzies, Warren Geer and Jamie Menzies drawing the assists. The game ended with Port winning once again 7-3. This qualified Port for the final against Napanee and this proved to be one of the best games in the tournament. Both teams played a tight first period and as a result the first event scoreless. Napanee opened up the scoring three minutes into the third to take a 1-0 lead. Port battled back less than a minute later to tie the game on a goal from Warren Geer assisted by Mark Barkey and An- drew Steele. Two minutes later Derek Fitzgerald put the Eagles ahead as he scored with the assists awarded to Todd Taylor and Clair Cornish. This ended the scoring for the second period and Port went in- to the third leading 2-1. Kevin Gibson made it 3-1 on a beautiful pass from John Lally to up the lead by two. John Lally let loose a wicked slapshot that left the diz- zy goaltender a little spun. Steve Connors elosed the scoring for the game as he scored the fifth with assists going to new linemates Warren Geer and Brad Menzies. The final score was Port Perry 5, Napanee 1. Congratulations is also extended to Brad Bricknell and Chris McCon- nell who played great throughout the tournament in the nets for the Eagles. Port's next home game is Mon- day, November 23 when they will meet Stouffville - so come on out and give them a hand. Goalie sharp in Y floor hockey With great goaltending by Doug Short, the Beige Flyers were able to tie the Port Perry Blue Jays 6-6 in Junior YMCA Floor Hockey action on November 9. The big shooter for the Beige Flyers was Matthew Koetje with 4 goals while Andrew Jacobsen and Aaron Stiller each got one. For the Blue Jays, Adam Jones found his range by scoring a hat- trick while Jamie Irvine scored 2 and Jamie Sauter 1. Great goalkeep- ing was supplied by Jeffrey Gunn and Jeff Whitfield coming up with Chris McConnell. On Sunday night, the Eagles skated to a 3-3 draw against a Double A squad out of Markham. good saves when necessary for their team. These two evenly matched teams are playing great games against each other, sharing the same record of 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie during the past 3 weeks. oo SENIORS In senior play, Mike Hepburn and Sean Sauter scored one goal each for the Port Perry Red Wings while Kevin Pearce scored 2 for the Green Giants in the first period. Matt Coyne played well in net for the Red Wings while Todd Stewart made great saves in net for the Green Giants. In the second period, Sean Sauter shut out the Green Giants while Mike Hepburn was able to get 2 more goals past Andrew Jones while in net for the Giants, to get his first hat-trick of the season. The Green Giants were finally able té6 get the puck past Sean Sauter three times in the 3rd period to win the game by a score of 5 to 4. Scoring for the Giants were Kevin Pearce, Louis Whitfield and Scott Prechitko while David Verschuuren made save after save in net to keep the Red Wings off the scoreboard during this period. Due to the fast action in this game, the boys were able to play 3 extra minutes of floor hockey and the pace did not slow down. David Verschuuren kept stopping everything that was shot at him when the Red Wings big line of Blair Prechitko, Kevin Stewart and Mike Hepburn kept applying the pressure on the Green Giants. John Hall and Brandon Johnston played good positional hockey for the Green Giants while Matthew Youmans and Ian Pierini worked extra hard defensively for the Red Wings.
