Plans revised for "Senior apartments The Parish of Immaculate Con- ception Church in Port Perry is prepared to submit new plans for a senior citizens apartment building on church land on Highway 7A. Bill Barr and Joe O'Reilly, acting as spokesmen for the Seniors Apart- ment Project Advisory Committee, told council Monday afternoon that a new architect will be hired with a new design presented to the municipality late in January, 1988. The apartment proposal for the church owned lands has been a con- troversial one in the past as Township council has twice turned down plans for a 27 unit building and one with 42 units. Council's reasons for rejecting earlier submissions were that with the Catholic Church and school already located on the parcel of land, there is not enough room for an apartment building. Later in the meeting, several councillors indicated they have not changed their minds from earlier positions regarding this proposal. Mr. Barr told the council he was not in a position on Monday to answer questions about the new design or plans. His purpose in ad- dressing council was simply to in- form councillors that a new plan will be submitted late in January. Homeowners ask for C-3 zoning The owners of three homes on the south side of Highway 7A in Port Perry have asked council to re-zone their properties to commercial C3. The applications were submitted to council Monday afternoon, and at a public hearing there was no op- position. The properties are direct- One of the property owners told council the homes don't have much attraction to buyers for residential use since there is so much commer- cial development around them. Councillor Howard Hall agreed that the properties should be C3, and he noted that they already are Council stood firm behind its by- law calling for 24' culverts to be in- stalled throughout township subdivi- sions after Mr. Art Couves came to them with a problem Monday morning. Mr. Couves has developed a sub- division on the west side of Highway 12 in the village of Greenbank, and many of the driveways have been constructed with only a 20' culvert. According to Mr. Couves, when he sold the lots in his subdivision he told the purchasers that he had a pile of culverts and that they could have one if they wished. Many of the residents took-up his offer and had the culverts installed in front of their properties. Roads Superintendent Ronn McDonald told council that he spoke with Wes Southern, who was install- ing many of the culverts, in 1977 and told him that the culverts were too short, so both Mr. Southern and Mr. Couves were aware of the deficiency. Mayor Taylor wondered why Mr. Couves continued to hand-out the culverts to the lot owners knowing they were not large enough to con- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 10, 1987 -- 3 20' culverts in Greenbank subdivision must be fixed Harvey Graham made a motion to insist on the 24' culverts but said he was willing to compromise and allow the property owners to add a four foot extension to the existing culverts where possible. Mr. Couves will be responsible for bringing an estimated twelve culverts up to standard. The cost, according to Roads Superintendent Ronn McDonald should be about $21. per foot. Public Health nurses ratify new contract Public Health Nurses with Durham Region went back to work Monday after ratifying a new two: year contract which will raise their salaries by about 12 per cent over the two years. The nurses had been staging a series of rotating strikes last week to back up their demands for im- proved salaries. A tentative agree- ment was reached last Thursday with the ratification vote to accept the contract held Sunday evening. Barb Unich, vice president of Local 57 of the Ontario Nurses Association said the contract, per hour more this year and receive a further 65 cents per hour in 1988, the final year of the contract. The nurses had been seeking a 14 per cent increase to give them pari- ty with wages earned by RN's in hospitals. Ms. Unich said the new contract "stops the backwards slide" in wage parity, but still leaves Durham public health nurses slightly below the average their counterparts elsewhere in Ontario receive. However, she said the nurses were pleased that the Region increased the earlier offer, which was about : ly across from the intersection of designated for future commercial gor: with the subdivision agree- retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year, eight per cent. : ' . . i : i ill gi "Ses ' About 80 of the 100 Regional public i Water Street and Highway 7A, just Use by virtue of the holding (C6) ment he had signed. ti "i about ai py he BOE LE fap Bb dhe 4 east of Carnegie Street.
