"Elusions" in Oshawa held their se- cond Armwrestling Tournament and, again, local competitors scored well among the 75 entered. Port Perry Armwrestling Team captured one First Place, three Se- cond Place awards and one Third Place prize. Terry Barton (sponsored by Scugog Roofing & General Contrac- ting) was undefeated throughout the contest and won First Place, Ban- tamweight Division. Mike Haigh, Team Captain (spon- sored by Schildt Machining Ltd.) with a record of seven wins and two losses for the day, placed second in the heavily-entered Lightweight Division, losing the final match to Bob Ambrose of Oshawa; however, during the finals, Mike and Bob had to have two matches, and Mike managed to beat Bob in the first of these, but lost the second and deciding contest. "This was a per- sonal triumph and it really made my day to beat him, as Bob was my original coach in armwrestling. One of these times I'll pin him down, though!" Mike says. Other members of the Team who did well were Curtis Herman (representing Clarke Bros. Aluminum) and Pat Mastrangelo who took fourth and fifth places, respectively, in Lightweight Divi- sion and, in the Middleweight category, Garth Carlson (sponsored by Wiggans Landscaping Ltd., Bowmanville) narrowly missed placing first when he lost to Rick Ir- win of Oshawa in the finals. Wes Johnston placed a very respectable third against tough op- position in the Heavyweight, in which Rick Irwin took first place and Todd Steele took second. In the quarter finals, Wes resolved his year-long rivalry by pinning Kevin takes top spot Malcolm (Nestleton) after several previous attempts. Needless to say, Wes was overjoyed wjth his win over Kevin this time. Kevin on the other hand was obviously not too dismayed as he went on to win the Men's Open Left category, leaving Garth Carlson to take second place in the finals. _ Other local entrants on Saturday were Rick Klock who took second place (Bantamweight), and his brother Mike, who won a third place in Flyweight and fourth in Bantamweight. Leianne Johnston, vet again, won the Ladies' Open Class, being undefeated all afternoon; this par- ticular category was marred by the early injury and forced retirement of Kelly Fewer who suffered a broken arm in her first match. Many of the spectators felt that Kel- ly's injury could be attributed as much to poor and inattentive refereeing as to the strength of her opponent. Port Perry Armwrestling Team donated a handsome plaque which was presented to the person judged to be the Most Sportsmanlike Com- petitor of the day; this went to Steve Miniema of Oshawa. The Tournament was, according to Mike Haigh, not one which could - be called "state of the art' by any means, but was good practice for the team and provided a showcase for those on the Team who already have sponsors and for others who in- vited potential sponsors to spectate. Mike is hoping that, by the year end, all members of the Team will be fully-sponsored and able to travel more widely to enter top-flight tour- naments throughout the Province. In the meantime, their next outing is to "Champs,"' Peterborough, next Saturday. Legionaires win two more games On Friday November the 6th the Port Perry Pee Wee Legionnaires played a game against the Oshawa Canadians and came out victorious with a 6-2 game. Jeff Parry scored Port's first goal on a pass from linemate Jason Cochrane. Port put a lot of pressure on the Oshawa team and Brad Moase came up with the second goal for Port with Duane Empringham and Nathan Brown assisting on the goal. Jeff Parry came up with his second goal of the game when Steve Laird made a great pass out in front of the Oshawa net and Jeff caught the goalie cold. Jeff Andrews also picked up an assist on the goal. In the second period Oshawa and Port had even shots on-net but Oshawa was not able to hol off the Legionnaires. Jason---Cochrane scored on a great end to end rush on an unassisted goal. In the third period Oshawa took a lot of bad penalties and the Legion- naires capitalized on their mistakes. The team travelled to Lindsay on Saturday night to play an outstan- ding game against the rugged Lind- say team and win the game 5 - 1. Steve Laird scored for Port with the assists to Jason Cochrane and Jeff Parry. Port outshot Lindsay but could only score the one goal in the first period. Rick Hutchinson was between the pipes for Port for the first period and a half and came up with some great saves. In the second period Jeff Parry scored for the Legionnaires while Lindsay had 2 men sitting in the penalty box. Assists went to Steve Laird, and Pete King. In the third period Port came out strong and outshot Lindsay by 15 - 7. Steve Laird picked up a perfect pass from linemate Jason Cochrane, who in turn had received a pass from Jeff Parry Jason Cochrane scored for Port with the assist to Jeff Parry.
