A resident of Durham Region for many years, she received her education in Oshawa. She was one of the first members of the Oshawa Little Theatre group and worked at CKLB where she hosted a Women's Program. Her talents included writing and directing both Children's and Adult's Radio Dramas and singing with local bands at the Jubilee Pavilion. She then took a course in speech and drama, which led her to an ex- citing three years with the Moxie Whitney Band in the Royal York Hotel. From there she went on to entertain with her own show. In 1966 she moved to Uxbridge Township where she continued her interest in the arts by acting and directing plays and writing skits for the Uxbridge Players. She also us- ed her talent to coach Public Speak- ing at St. Joseph's Catholic School and to present puppet shows to students and childrens groups throughout the area. In 1983 she became a volunteer with Scugog Community Care, after moving to Port Perry. In 41% years she has averaged more than five hours per week assisting Communi- ty Care clients. Her sense of humour and thoughtful manner endears her to all. Her volunteer involvement in- cludes delivering Meals on Wheels and providing transportation for doctor appointments or therapy ses- sions. She shops for three people on a weekly basis and for others as needed. As well, she can be found appearing as Charlie Chaplin or Santa Claus at the luncheon date program, and participating on the Advisory Committee. In addition, muffins and fresh fruit mysteriously appear for the en- joyment of the office volunteers and staff. The mystery muffins also find their way to the homes of the peo- ple she helps. Mrs. Hartney's service in the community extends to the Com- munity Memorial Hospital where she has been a volunteer for two years. She is Past President of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Perry. Each year she visits 30 to 40 people for Opera- tion Scugog (the Christmas appeal for the needy and shut-ins). Lastly, the puppet shows still go to the schools occasionally and you can find her entertaining at the Port Perry Villa and Community Nurs- ing Home. When asked if she would allow her name to stand for nomination, her reply went something like, *'I shouldn't get an award for doing something that gives me so much enjoyment. I get back more than I could ever give." Perhaps so, but there are many people in Scugog Township who have found their cammunity a bet- ter place to live because of her fine qualities. Other winners include Joan Mur- ray, The Arts and Multiculturalism, Cathy O'Flynn, Woman in the "Workforce, and Patricia Arnold, Young Woman of Distinction Award. The awards dinner, a gala affair. 1s one of the major vearly fun drawsers for the YWCA It featured an interesting speech by keynote speaker and lawyer Jane Pepino. member of the Metro Toronto Board of Commissioners of Police, as well as chairperson of the Board's Task Force on Public Violence Against Women and Children Louise Hartney was just overwhelmed when she realized she had won the YWCA Women of Distinction award for Community Service. Cheerful and outgoing, Louise says she loves her volunteer work, and can't believe she would receive an award for something she enjoys so much. See story for details. New John Deere | AMT 600.
