CW. Lundy, AMC.T. Regional Clerk Gary Herrema Regional Chairman sikkens ExaA | They come from all over Doris and Laverne Morrison are different than most Scugog Island pheasant hunters, in that they are a husband and wife team. Most of the people who slog through bush and swamp in search of a pheasant dinner are men, so it's rather different seeing Mr. and Mrs. Morrison working together. But in many ways, they're typical of the hundreds of hunters who drive to the top of Scugog Island every to enjoy pheasant hunt year for the Ministry of Natural i , Resources Controlled Pheasant ~ Hunt, run by Seagrave resident -- Mike Pallotta. They're typical because they drove a fair distance to bag a few birds--the Morrisons come from Keswick, near Lake Simcoe. But other hunters come from even further away, places like New Jersey and Florida. Generally, they come to Ontario for moose hunting or fishing, but while they're here, they often make a side trip to Scugog Island to take advantage of the hunt, which runs from September 25 to the second week in November. Mr. Pallotta raises the pheasants at his Pine Ridge Hunting Preserve and Dog Kennels (where he also has chuckar, partridge, and bobwhite quail). Four days a week, Wednes- day to Friday, he releases 1.5 birds per hunter, on average of 25 a day, on Crown land at the northern tip of the Island. Hunters are then required to pay a daily license fee, and are invited to go hunting, with a maxium two bird limit per person. They have to know how to use a gun, of course, and should have a reliable shot-gun on hand, as well as aretriever-type bird dog, and at this time of year, some warm clothing. There are rules that must be followed as well. Hunters are not permitted to shoot over other peo- ple's dogs, they're not allowed to ground shoot, and they're required to know, at all times, what they're shooting at. And when everything goes accor- ding to plan, hunters have an 80 per cent chance of bagging the limit. As for the meat, well, some peo- ple say pheasants taste a wee bit like rabbits if they're cooked right. Mr. and Mrs. Morrison will be cooking up the two birds they caught last Saturday, probably for lunch sometime in the near future. Doris and Laverne Morrison drove all the way from Keswick to Scugog Island to do a little pheasant hunting on a rainy Satur- day afternoon. For more on the controlled hunt, see story.
