yo TTR 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 6, 1987 Taylor Ford Mercury open for business Larry now sells the best and fixes the rest Larry Taylor recalls with a smile how he got into the business of sell- ing Ford and Mercury cars and trucks. Over a year ago, he had an en- -quiry from a real estate agent who had a client interested in buying his busy garage on Highway 7A just west of the Port Perry town limits. Larry had no intention of selling his business. But he had heard that Ford was trying to find a suitable location for a dealership in the Port Perry area. So, he picked up the phone and called the Ford Company. the place for ... CHICKEN & RIBS featuring ... Salad Bar, Children's Menu ....and more! LOCATED on HWY. 12 Just south of Thickson Rd. 655-8911 He expressed an interest in ac- quiring a dealership, the company offered it to him and that set off several hectic months of negotia- tions, paper work and so on between himself and the company. All the details were ironed out this summer and by August 1, he began taking delivery of his first shipment of new Fords and Mercurys. And on October 17, Larry, his wife Fran (who handles the books and the computers) sales manager David Legge, sales rep Carol Hill and the rest of the staff will officially celebrate Taylor Ford Mercury with a grand opening. The public will be invited to drop by for coffee, some free draws, and of course, the chance to take a look at the 1988 Fords, Mercurys, Rangers, Broncos and F-series trucks. Larry told the Star last week that since acquiring a dealership re- quired a substantial financial com- mitment on his part, he obviously had to have a lot of confidence in the products he would be selling and servicing. He says over the past few years, Ford has invested a lot of money in steps to improve the quality of the cars and trucks it builds. He notes that the F-150 pick-up is the best sell-- ing truck in its class, and the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1987. With the dual franchise of Ford and Mercury, he has 11 different makes of cars from the compact Escort to the luxurious Grand Mar- quis, along with five different brands of trucks from vans to pick- ups. Getting into the new car business has meant some changes for Larry and his staff. He's in the process of changing to a fully computerized system for all aspects of the business. ""That's something we probably would have had to do anyway. This just pushed it ahead a bit," he says. Larry is a licenced mechanic. He has two other licenced mechanics and an apprentice on staff, and it was back in 1975 when he bought his own garage in Port Perry, a Texaco station at the corner of Highway 7A and Union Ave. Five years later, he moved west, so to speak, buying the present location in 1980.
