Ted Stacey of Bowmanville receiv- ed a third in showmanship. 4-H Horse Club Holds Achievement Day On Thursday, Sept. 3rd, the Durham East 4-H Horse Club under the leadership of Doug & Mary Ruth Moore, Shelley Delaney and Natalie Warner as youth leader, held a horse show at the farm of Wayne Beckett. As part of their 4-H project, members had to demonstrate their abilities to groom a horse for show and to show a horse to its best ad- vantage. Valerie Bush, Renee Pleasance, Laura Gilbank, Joanne Carter and Pauline Beckett were in the first place grouping in the Grooming Class. In the Senior Showmanship class, Valerie Bush, Pauline Beckett, Natalie Warner and Joanne Carter were in the first place grouping. In the Junior Showmanship class, Heather Todd and Laura Gilbank placed in the first place grouping. After the compulsory classes, members could take part in a varie- ty of games and activities designed PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 15, 1987 -- 39 Local 4-H members have good C.N.E. show to test their ability to handle their horses and their equipment. Winner of the Award for Best Horsemanship and Spirit of the day was Joanne Carter. This award was presented by the leaders, Doug & Mary Ruth Moore. The 1987 Blackstock Fair was the scene of Achievement Programs for the Durham East Field Crop, Sheep, Swine and Beef 4-H clubs. Members from the Hampton and Blackstock 4-H Sewing Plus clubs also displayed their projects at the Blackstock Fair. . In the 4-H Field Crop Club under the leadership of Lawrence McLaughlin and Donovan Smith, Howard Sikma placed first in the corn class. Ian Andrews and David Tamblyn placed 2nd and 3rd respec- tively with their corn exhibits. In the barley class, Brent McLaughlin and Jeff Byers received first prize. Shelley Holliday received second. For second cut hay, Eric and Glenn Barkey tied for first, and Rene Heeringa received second. Richard Green received a first place for his silage corn. In the 4-H Sheep Club under the leadership of Jim Coombes and Fred Slemon as youth leader, Todd Ormiston was Champion Showman, while Terry Ormiston was Reserve Showman. In the conformation class, Shelley Holliday showed the first place lamb and Shannon Cor- nish showed the second place lamb. During the 4-H Swine Show under the leadership of Dale VanCamp, Richard Green placed first in showmanship while Bryan was se- cond. In the conformation class, Bryan Green showed the top scoring pig while Jill VanCamp was second. In the 4-H Beef Club under the leadership of Jim Byers, Gerry Cor- nish and Wayne Beckett and Bob Goble as youth leader, Brian Goble and Penny Beckett respectively were Champion and Reserve Cham- pion Showmen. Pauline Beckett and Ken Cornish placed first and second in the Junior Showmanship class, while Brian Goble and Penny Beckett placed first and second in the Senior Showmanship class. In the beef conformation classes, Joanne Handley showed the Cham- pion Junior Heifer and Penny Piper showed the Reserve Champion calf. In the Sewing Plus classes, Lucy Davidson, Cornelia Mostert, Paul Hindman and Debra VanCamp received first in their various classes.
