However, apparently Secretary of State David Crombie does not agree. In a recently- released discussion paper ironical- ly entitled 'Proud to be Canadian," Mr. Crombie suggests downgrading or eliminating the Queen from the Citizenship Oath. I am writing to alert your readers to this insulting and untimely proposal, and to ask them to join in making certain that it does not become law. Canada is a constitutional monar- chy. That principle is entrenched in our recently-proclaimed Constitu- tion, and the presence this year in Quebec of both the Queen and the Queen Mother shows how uncon- troversial and widely accepted is the role of the Crown. Recognition of this fact should be made by "anyone who wants to become a Canadian. One of the discussion paper's pro- posed Oaths places the Queen in 4th fplace, and eliminates the promise "to bear true aNegiance" to the Sovereign. This is justified as follows: *'Some believe the country itself ought to take precedence over the Crown," falsely suggesting that there is a conflict. Our way of ex- pressing love of country is through loyalty to the Crown, because the Queen is the neutral and non- political Head of State. The other proposed Oath justifies removing any mention of the Queen with the ridiculous argument that immigrants' having difficulty with English or French may prefer a shorter Oath. Come on, Mr. Crom- bie - which is more difficult to understand, "being faithful' to the most widely-known and loved woman in the world, or promising to "abide by" a Constitution, a piece of paper most have never read? People matter most; that is what Monarchy reminds us. For such an insulting proposal to come from a Conservative Cabinet Minister in the 35th year of the Queen's reign, and of her unswerv- ing service to Canada, can only disturb the average loyal citizen, who wants immigrants to share his proud loyalties, not reject them. | urge readers to write to their M.P., to Mr. Crombie and to the Prime Minister expressing opposition to these suggestions. To The Editor: Finding money that other people have lost, to me is like a steel pole to lightning. I have been attracting More traffic problems (From page 6) Road. Residents' cars are' numerous enough but when the construction vehicles travel down with increas- ing frequency, it is a danger for our children to cross the street. A se- cond entrance, such as the extension of Lakeview Drive would im- mediately alleviate our concerns and fears, not to mention the dust, dirt and noise. Common sense would dictate that for an area of our size, and growing 'rapidly, a second entrance would be an absolute necessity. Should Or- chard Road ever be blocked by parked cars, service vehicles, or ~any type of road construction, emergency vehicles would be unable to reach the majority of homes in the subdivision. In winter ~ the congestion is even more pro- nounced, creating a greater pro- blem in the event of an emergency. We have been fortunate for ten years. How much longer can we de- pend on luck? Our last comment is not a concern but a question. Since the construc- tion of Apple Valley ten years ago, four other major developments have been completed--or begun: Cawkers Creek, Perry Glenn, Westport Estates, and the new Poplar Park Victorian Village. In each of those four areas, not a base- ment was excavated until the roads were in place, including two en- trances. How has the Apple Valley area not received the same essential consideration? Lakeview Drive is to be extended. Earlier this summer, preliminary construction was begun and we were hopeful that the road would finally be completed. You see, I have been going to Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions within one hundred miles of Toron- to for many years. I suppose my luck with money goes back to when I was eleven years old. I visited the Royal Winter Fair. It was not the kind of small town fair - lots of tractors, farm equipment on display, candy apples, the usual stuff, found today at your local fair. I was with a friend, when I look- ed under his feet. I found a two dollar bill and two one dollar bills. I picked them up, I smiled -- finding money will do that to me. I sure made our day at the Fair. I do believe it was then that I developed my method for finding money. When I walk, I scan the ground before me. I do not really drop my head and stare at the ground. I keep my head up, but I watch just where I am walking. It must work, very seldom have I been with anyone who has found money, but I have found lots- of money - myself in Port Perry, Scugog Township and the Region of Durham since we moved here in 1965. Because I am communicating through this newspaper (not TV), you cannot see my smile nor can you hear the happy tone of my voice. Over those many years, I have returned watches, rings, purses, wallets and packages to people in Port Perry, Oshawa, Whitby, Markham, Stouffville, Ottawa, Lon- don and Toronto. Some have said I could keep the money, they only wanted their per- sonal contents. On the other hand, - when I returned a purse or wallet, the man of the house wanted to know if I could find his wife or daughter. My reason for writing this letter, I spoke with the Editor about attrac- ting large sums of lost money. People in and around Port Perry lose hundreds of dollars each year. I know because when I walk, hard- ly a day goes by that I do not find money. I have found one, two five, ten, twenty, fifty and one hundred dollar bills, certain areas are better than another. Some people walk for health, but in reality I walk for money. Don't tell anyone, but I just might become a professional stroller. Port Perry needs (better) sidewalks in some areas? As always Roy Walker Smith Port Perry, Ontario PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 25, 1987 -- 13 The war canoes are coming to Lake Scugog on Sunday, August 30 and anyone interested is more than welcome to give it a try. A war canoe '"'open house' and demonstration will be held at the Port Perry waterfront starting at about 11:00 AM and running through to 4:00 PM on August 30. Members of two Toronto canoe clubs, West Rouge and Balmy Beach, will be on hand to provide in- struction and give demonstrations in the art of racing these 30 foot long canoes which have crews of 14 pad- dlers plus a skipper. The West Rouge Club recently won the Cana- dian Junior championship in war canoe racing. For residents of Port Perry and ~~ War canoe demo area interested in learning more about this sport, just show up on August 30 at Palmer Park. Paddles, life jackets and war canoes will be available. This open house and demonstra- tion has been organized by the recently formed Scugog Canoe Club and Lang Cope is hoping that a lot of local people will show an interest. Kids must be ten years of age or over to go out in the canoes. Also on Monday evening, August 31, starting at 6:15 PM, there will be a family night where parents and their children can learn about these war canoes under the guidance of an expert instructor. It just seems like such a waste to have those lovely tracks meandering through all that beauty and not being able to use them except for a walk or a cross country ski or snowmobile ride in winter.
