"I will be stressing personal con- tact with as many voters as possi- ble. That's my own philosophy and the philosophy of David Peterson. Governments must be available to the people." "I plan to run a happy campaign. So far the response has been very supportive and encouraging and we are having a ball," she told a group of reporters at an informal press conference held last Thursday after- noon at Durham College in Oshawa. While stressing the importance of a "people oriented' campaign, the 48 year old Orono resident and Durham Region councillor for the past seven years, also said she won't be ignoring or ducking any of the issues. Mrs. Hamre made it clear she is strongly opposed to any tampering of the Auto'Pact in exchange for a free trade package worked out at. the federal level. She is also opposed to the New Democrat proposal for a state run auto insurance plan in Ontario similar to what is in place in Manitoba. She prefers some kind of a government watch-dog to ensure that all drivers in the province are treated fairly and equally when it comes to insurance premiums and that certain age groups are not lumped together regardless of their own individual driving records. In response to a question that some Conservatives have charged the Liberals may have a "hidden agenda' to unveil after the election campaign, Mrs. Hamre said no way. "I don't operate with hidden agen- das and the Liberal Party doesn't operate that way, either," she stated. . As a Regional councillor, Mrs. Hamre is very familiar with the growing problem facing Durham about what to do with the garbage when existing land fill sites are finished, a problem that could cost $20 million to overcome. She believes the provincial government will have to get involv- ed with local (Regional) municipalities to help share the enormous costs of finding new land- fill sites and then going through the ~ long and expensive process of exten- sive hearings to ensure the site is en- vironmentally safe. She suggested that provincial money should also be available to up-grade local roads leading to the land fill sites. With a major nuclear genérating station (Darlington) located in the Durham East riding, the issue of safe transportation of nuclear RENT PORT PERRY ~ Carpet Cleaners Tile Cutters ~ Generators © Compressors Dollies Scatfolds Heavy Equipment Lo {TEs Pumps Log Sphtters Hamre to run a happy campaign materials has surfaced as a local concern. She said the transportation of such materials has been going on for years and if the rules are strict- ly adhered to this transportation is as safe as humanly possible. She is adamently opposed to the export of nuclear materials that could find their way into weapons and suggests that Ontario should be setting up industries to process these materials rather than trying to export things like tritium which could even in-directly wind up in the manufacture of weapons. In response to questions from a reporter, Mrs. Hamre declared that such things as the sale of beer in cor- ner stores and the extension of hours in licenced establishments are "non- issues" in this election campaign. But she added that personally she "believes Ontario residents have ade- quate access to beer through the Retail outlets, and: with licenced establishments now open to 1:00 A.M., there is no need to extend their hours. As for the controversial Sunday shopping issue, Mrs. Hamre said she is not in favour of a blanket opening on Sundays for all stores. She feels that the provision for Sun- day shopping in tourist areas is a good one. Commenting on the fact that Durham East is a new riding with new areas, like Scugog Township, Mrs. Hamre said these factors pre- sent a "challenge" for the candidates. "The boundary changes call for creative thinking to reach as many people as possible,' she said. The 48-year old mother of four children and grandmother of two, pledged an up-beat positive cam- paign, stressing her own political experience at the municipal level and the record of Premier David Peterson and the Liberal govern- ment over the past couple of years. She said it will not be part of her campaign to go around taking per- sonal shots at her two opponents in Durham East. But she said both the NDP and Conservatives have tradi- tional areas of strength in the riding and she will be working hard to make in-roads in these areas. Mrs. Hamre has the open support of at least one powerful local politi- cian. Durham Region Chairman Gary Herrema is working actively on her behalf alongside Marilyn Pearce of Port Perry who is manag- ing the campaign. Mrs. Hamre said the campaign will cost in excess of $30,000. Both Mr. Herrema and Mrs. Pearce were present at the news conference last week and as the time dragged on, they both glanced at their watches and reminded the candidate she was due to meet with residents at a seniors citizens home.
