Ls a Co - This isn't the award-winning salmon caught the taxidermist's, being mounted, and at 30.7 by Jeffrey Vernon, (above). This fish was actual- pounds, is four pounds heavier than the one Jef- ly caught by his fathér, Larry. Jeffrey's fishisat frey is holding. See story for details. Jeffrey lands a lunker - and wins the big prize Even the most avid fishermen don't often catch fish nearly as big as they are. Eleven year old Jeffrey Vernon of Blackstock did just that recently when he nabbed a Lake Ontario's salmon weighing in at 30.72 pounds. The fish was a winner in more ways than one. Needless to say, on July 24 at 8 a.m., Jeffrey reeled in the biggest fish of anyone else in the category, and won himself some fine prizes, including a 2.2 horsepower Mercury outboard ("I'm giving that to my Dad"), tackle, mounting for his fish at a taxidermist, $200 cash ("I'm go- "ing tosaveit"), a four hour charter fishing trip, a fishing vest, and some City of Oshawa bookends (*'For my Mom's cookbooks'). Although it was his first year entered in the contest, Jeffrey is no novice when it comes to fishing. He's been going out with his Dad for as long as he can remember, and Larry Vernon is as avid as they . come, having won prizes in many contests himself. He caught the winning fish with a blue and silver eagle-eye lure, bor- rowed from his Dad, with special downrigging equipment on his ~ Dad's boat. And although Larry Vernon gave some advice when his son struggled with the huge fish (the Job took 15 minutes), Jeffrey did all the work by himself, hurting his wrist in the process. The minor injury was worth it, however, when Jeffrey went down to Oshawa on August 8 to collect his winnings. And even though he's now a prize- winning fisherman, Jeffrey still says he fishes '"To have fun." gy ou or -- _-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 11, 1987 -- 17 Obituary George Jackson George Harold Jackson, M.D. passed away peacefully at his home in Port Perry on Wednesday, July 8, 1987.
