12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 11, 1987 Going into a business is alittle overwhelming A TITIES ROImS--_IS-------- Be a a a a a ee i a tn Is N Bonnie Durward admits she's a little overwhelmed with her new business venture, but she's rising to the challenge with optimism and plenty of enthusiasm. The Greenbank resident has just purchased Country Classics from former owner Jill Bradley, and she's more excited about the new responsibility than anything else. The deal, handled by Howard Forder Real Estate, closed July 31st, only a few weeks after Bonnie saw an ad in the paper and decided to put in an offer. "Really, it happened so fast," she recalls. "I think the whole thing was completed in less than a week." The suddeness of the takeover also came as a shock to Bonnie's former employer, a Markham 'in- surance broker. She had been think- ing about running her own business for about three years, but her actual decision to do it caught her former boss off guard. "1 think they were a little stunn- ed in the beginning, but they wish- ed me luck inthe end," she says. 'I mean, I liked my job, it was a good job, but it was one of those things | didn' t want to make a career out of." - For 2 your n- -home, me, personal portraits .. Insurance, she knows, is a far cry from a women's clothing store, but she's fairly prepared for the job at hand. She has Jill Bradley helping her get started, and she does have some retail experience. Bonnie once volunteered to work in a flower shop without being paid. In return, the shop owner taught her "the ropes' about keeping books, buying, and so on. "Although it's a different business, certain things are still the same," she says. Bonnie is also a self-confessed clothes lover as is the rest of the family, including her youngest daughter who helps out at Country Classics on a part-time basis. 'We all just love clothes,' she. says. 'You should see our closets-- we should be ashamed! And I look around here and want to take everything home!" At the moment, the store is stock- ed with a new fall line ordered by Jill, which saves lots of headaches for Bonnie. When it comes time for spring buying, Jill has offered to go to the shows with Bonnie to offer advice. Bonnie says her help has been invaluable. "A lot of things have fallen into place for me here," she says. As for Port Perry itself, Bonnie couldn't be happier. Her former job in Markham put her in contact with the many shops lining Unionville and Markham"s quaint streets, and she sees the same quaintness in Port Perry. "I really like Markham and Unionville. They've got a nice at- mosphere. You feel comfortable there and this is really what's hap- pening to Port Perry with the new lights and wrought iron benches. I just love. the look and feel of Port Perry. There's so much potential." Bonnie Durward sure has been busy these days, getting to know the in's and out's of her newly acquired business, Country Classics. See story for details. Maybe someone needed rain Epsom and Area News by Jean Jeffery Maybe someone needed the rain on Sunday, but it sure cancelled off Epsom's Community Picnic at Cameron Lake. Mr. & Mrs. McKay who were in the area called on Nor- man and Betty Tapscott. Anne had been with Donna Kerry at the Kerry cottage near Emsdale, so the two girls came down to Tapscott's cottage. Over the weekend, the Central Seven group took a trip to Niagara Falls. Carl Hansen really enjoyed the outing. Thanks to the good folk ' who staff Central Seven and help the. less fortunate to enjoy a better life. Next week, there will be Vacation Bible School at Epsom 9:30 til 11:30.
