In- surance claims adjusters are overwhelmed with complaints of theft and damage from people who have their cars towed. I realize that in order not to damage a car's transmission or parking brake, the towing operator must somehow get into the car. However, shouldn't that operator wait until the driver ap- pears with keys in hand, and then ask" And as for Elusions that night, why didn't they have policemen on hand before the crowds started arriving? If a traffic cop was available, maybe there wouldn't have been any need for towing at all. And | just can't believe Oshawa City Council's stupidity in allow- ing a huge nightclub like Elusions to be built where there is little to no parking for such large crowds. In retrospect, Elusions should have been built on the outskirts of Oshawa, with a huge parking lot surrounding it. After all, Oshawa doesn't exact- ly compare to Toronto when it comes to public transit. In Hogtown, it's easy for pub hop- pers to take the subway at 1 a.m. It's not so easy to do the same thing in Oshawa, where most peo- ple rely on cars to get them around at that hour. Or any hour, for that matter. ONE WOMAN'S VIEW by Chris Carlisle tan lotion on my back. blades. I'd have been safer on lawnmower The conversation around this town has been absolutely mind bog- gling all week. The heat, I guess. The deepest, most dramatic comment of the week came from another neighbour as we met on the tracks. "It was so hot'last night you couldn't get a breath." He shook his head. 'You couldn't even get a breath." Scugog Memorial Funeral Chapel was presented with an appreciation plaque from the Durham Region Lung Association last Thursday morning. The plaque was awarded 'to representative Katherine Watson in recognition of support given to the Lung Association's Gift Program. The Lung Association has, for the past several years, been actively promoting awareness of the impor- tance of Memorial gifts. These lasting tributes are used locally to bring relief through research and rehabilitative services to many suf- fering the crippling effects of various lung diseases, such as lung cancer, emphysema and asthma. Elaine Buchanan, a local representative of the Durham Lung Association, made the presentation with the help of John Walker, fun- draising co-ordinator for the association. "It's a lot of work the funeral homes do for us on a volunteer basis," Mr. Walker told the Star. Funeral homes collect donations (often given as well as or in lieu of flowers) and then save them for the Lung Association, work that is done voluntarily. Mr. Walker says there has been a 26 per cent increase of memorial donations in the past year. "The one thing about a memorial donation is, it's a lasting tribute," he Elaine Buchanan (right) of the Durham Region Lung Associa- tion presented Katherine Watson of Scugog Memorial Funeral Chapel with an appreciation plaque last week. Work bee plan in Utica This stunned me ---- I'd been out on the lake drifting around in a canoe in the full moonlight watching all those jumping fish and after dipping my arms into the lake, I was actually shaking and anx- ious to get back to land. I was probably the only one for miles and miles with the shivers. 'Not a single breath," pretty hot stuff. he said again, more to himself than to me, deep in thought. (Did somebody suffocate? Did he murder so- meone, planning to claim heat as the cause?) I figure the heat wave wasn't so bad. It gave every single per- son a level on which to relate to others. Still, the Tories in Ontario didn't spend 40 years in power without building some kind of base of support and strong local organiza- - tions that will be a factor in this election. So, the campaign is underway. All three candidates in Durham East will likely be spending a fair amount of time in Scugog Township as this is a new area of the riding.
