Despite heat, nursing home folks keep busy by Wendy Clark i I hope that all the vacationers are enjoying a safe and happy holiday. - Monday, July 20 we had outside games. Due to the extreme hot weather the games were kept very minimal. Games ranged from guessing games to card games to a vacation game. Afterwards refreshing lemonade was served. The following day we were all very busy catching up on some gardening. Some residents were hoeing flower beds while others were watering them. Later on in the evening the Port Perry Pentecostal Church provided a worship service. Wednesday there was 13 eager residents that loaded on a bus and headed off to the C.N.E. grounds for the International Seniors Picnic. Several draws were held and we were lucky to have a winner in our group. Mr. Lionel Blaikie won a nice gold chain. Two bands entertained ~ us from the Bandshell and several people were up dancing. I unders- tand that Margaret Edwards had a great looking dance partner by the name of Fred Flintstone. A lovely salad plate lunch and cold drinks were served to us. Despite the large crowds we all had a great time and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. On the 23rd we had crafts. Several ladies are working on completing their unfinished projects. We also discussed ideas for our upcoming Flea Market that is scheduled for Aug. 21. a To end the week on Friday we all gathered in front of the T.V. and the fan to watch a video called "Na- tional Velvet." Afterwards everyone more than graciously welcomed the Ice Cream Parlour wagon. What a nice delightful after- noon treat!! Into the last week of July, we started off Monday, July 27 with out- side walks. Several residents real- ly enjoyed getting out for a truly refreshing excercised walk. Tuesday we had Reminiscing and Reading group. Being nice weather we gathered out on the patio. Several memorable stories were reaccounted and told. Afterwards we all enjoyed a juicy piece of watermelon. During the evening the 1 church service was hosted by the Manchester/Island United Church. In the afternoon on Wednesday, July 29 the Seagrave UCW visited and hosted us for our monthly bir- -thday party. Quite a variety of entertainment was provided rang- ing from singing to chello solo to harmonica solo. Birthday cake, ice cream and refreshments were also served. Each special July birthday resident received a nice gift from the UCW. ae Thursday we had 15 residents at- tend the Lindsay O.P.P. Pipe Band Entertainment down at the Band- shell. Truly everyone enjoyed this delightful music. On the last day of July we had Bingo. There was several lucky win- ners in the crowd today. Into the lat- ter part of the afternoon I saw the ice cream parlour wagon making its rounds. : : Upcoming birthdays are Mrs. Mertie Stone (Aug. 4) and Mrs. Isabel Burtis (9). For more information please contact Kim Mitchell at 985-3205 (Mon. to Fri.). Recently I came across this arti- cle in the Dear Abby section of a Toronto paper. This may help peo- ple realize that seniors in nursing homes need company more than on- ly once a year during holiday time. -- You say that you can't do anything. Can you read? Good. Read to me. My eyes aren't what they used to be. -- Can you write? Good. Write a let- ter or a card for me. My hands are Ta shaky. / -- Can you sing? Good. Help me with the words and I'll sing along. -- Can you tell me about your job? I was a nurse once, myself. -- Can you listen? Wonderful. I'm starved for conversation. -- Can you make a sponge cake or zucchini bread or angel biscuits or fudge? They aren't on the nursing home menu, but I remember how good they were and I would like to taste them again. -- Do you play checkers or dominoes or rummy? Fine, so do I. ' But there is never anyone who has the time. They are understaffed around here, you know; ~~ -- Do you play the violin-or the flute . or the piano? My hearing is poor but I can hear any kind of music. Even if I fall asleep, you'll kiiow I Sore areata ono it. -- Once we were somebodies, just like you. We were farmers and farmers' wives, teachers, nurses, beauticians, stockbrokers, electri- cians, bankers, and sheriffs, and maybe a few outlaws too. We're not all senile --- just old and needing more attention than our families can give us. This home, whatever its name, is "home" to us, and you're an invited guest. -- Please come. The welcome mat is always out -- not just on Christmas. -- I' hope you will keep this and read it again in January, February, and every other month of the year. We'll still be here and our needs will be the same. Author Unknown To end this column we would like to congratulate Lisa Ivory from Blackstock who has won the B&W/AM-FM Television Set. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket. All money profited will go in- to the residents Activity Fund.
