War canoe races to be feature Lisa is a Queen of October lakefront regatta A Port Perry resident is more than pleased with the interest shown by local residents towards the for- mation of a canoe club in this area. Lang Cope, who has lived in Port Perry since 1975 has initiated a plan whereby citizens will be able to gain hands-on experience in the fun to be had paddling the war canoe. "I want to form a canoe club on the lake (Scugog) for both sexes, age 10 and up," said Cope, explain: ing canoeing was an "alternative sport" to baseball and hockey, par- ticularily for those over the age of 17 who are unable to proceed in either of those sports because of the lack of teams, or just because they do not wish to participate in a con- tact sport. Cope, who has been an active par- ticipant in canoeing since 1947, has presented a film to students of grade six and up in the elementary schools in the area, and plans to show it to those in the high schools starting this September. He indicates he has met with enthusiasm to date, not on- ly from students, but from their parents and members of various service clubs. To familiarize local residents with canoeing, Cope will be bringing two of the mammoth war canoes, bor- rowed from Balmey Beach Canoe Club in Toronto where he has been Commander for several years, to Port Perry. He is scheduling "hands-on" instruction in the opera- tion of the canoes on Monday, Tues- day and Thursday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. for the remainder of the summer. The instruction will culminate with a regatta on October 4. So far, he has received an indica- tion from the police department, high school teachers, and several sports and community groups that they will be placing a team in the event. Local teams will be joined by teams from several canoe clubs in- cluding Balmey Beach, Mississauga, Mohawk (Burlington), Oakville and West Rouge Canoe Clubs for the day of competition and fun. According to Cope, Larry Kane, gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and several other olympions will be on hand for the festivities providing they have returned from the University Games being held in Europe. He said officials of the Western Ontario Division and Cana- dian Canoe Club Association are behind the formation of the new club "all the way' and have pledges their support. The war canoe is 30 feet long and weighs 200 pounds. It is manned by 14 paddlers and a coxswain. With a price tag of $10,000 each, Cope ex- plained to Scugog council on Mon- day that the borrowed canoes would be covered by insurance, but re- quested a spot be allocated for their storage while here for the five-week period. He suggested his priority location would be the grassed area to the north of the Latcham Centre, which he would fence in. He also re- quested council's assistance in pro- viding bleachers for viewing the races. Mayor Gerry Taylor told Cope, "The prospect looks exciting and you're right...we have a natural resource down there (at the water- front) that we don't take total ad- vantage of." Taylor assured Cope council would work along with him by assessing a location which would be best for the storage of the canoes and said arrangements would be made to ensure bleachers were in- stalled for the October 4 event. Cope has already been distributing posters and photographs around town to gain public interest and by August 15 he said flyers containing applications would be ready for all who wanted to participate. "We will welcome anyone, but groups, or people who already know each other, would, give them a definite advantage," said Cope. Classifications for entry will be bantam, age 14 and under; midget, age 15 and 16; juvenile, age 17 and junior, age 18 and up. There will also be a section for adults and groups. [wes SHORE MARINE PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 28, 1987 -- 3 (From page 1) The compulsory contests included a private interview with the judges (nd parents allowed), sportswear modelling and party dress modell- ing. Lisa was also entered in the costume, photogenic and bathing suit competitions--all optional. She was named fourth runner-up in both costume and photogenic competitions, and she won the bathing suit competition. As a result, she won the grand prize, Miss Pee Wee Sunburst (for girls four to six years oldf a cheque for $200, several trophies (including one bigger than Lisa is), a banner, crown and scepter, a walkman, brass picture frame, a Viewmaster and a digital wrist watch. Lisa said her favourite prize was the watch. While many children might have been nervous or thrilled about being on stage, Lisa was happy just to be staying in a hotel. "She was very excited because she got to stay in a hotel and swim in the pool,"' her mom recalled with a grin. "She also met a lot of friends." Generally, the exposure of winn- ing the Sunburst crown often leads to modelling or acting jobs, although Mrs. McClure hasn't had any offers yet. "I'm not sure if she will because she doesn't have any modelling ex- perience,' she said. 'But by winter, if we haven't heard anything, 1 might put together a portfolio." If nothing else, the trophies and momentos will be saved for Lisa to enjoy when she's older. Several local businesses spon- sored Lisa in the contest, including McClure's Taxidermy and Guide Service, Dixie Lee, Brooklin Flour Mills Ltd., Lesley-Ann Interiors, The Children's Den, Port Perry Star, Barry's Variety Store, Brock's Department Store, Shirley McKen- zie, as well as Lisa's grandparents and mom and dad.
