22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 28, 1987 17 baserunners The Greenbank Gamblers had to settle for an extra inning tie game with the Oshawa MCL Juniors last Monday night in Greenbank Park and the main reason was the inabili- ty of the Greenbank batters to cash their baserunners. The Gamblers left the bases load- ed in the first, third and eighth inn- ings and during the nine innings Greenbank left a total of seventeen runners on the basepaths. In the first inning Paul Goreski . and Greg Newell hit back to back homeruns to give Oshawa a quick 2-0 lead. Greenbank cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Neil Rodd walked and eventually scored on a fielders choice. Oshawa went ahead 3-1 in the fifth inning when Chris Jones scored on Steve Ashbys single. The score stayed at 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth when John Foster walked and Neil Rodd singled. The runners were advanced to second and third and the Oshawa first baseman then misplayed Hugh Johnstons sharp grounder and Greenbank tied the game at 3-3. Gambler starter Ken Goreski was relieved in the sixth inning by Mark Goreski who held Oshawa off the score sheet for the rest of the game. Dave Chilvers went the distance for M.C.L. and though he was in trouble in almost every inning he managed to dodge the bullet and pit- ched out of one jamb after another. Greg Rodd and Neil Rodd had two hits each for Greenbank with Hugh Johnston, Trevor Till, Brian Till, Rodd Real and John Foster each contributing one safety. On Wednesday night the Gamblers travelled to Claremont to play the Markham-Claremont Juniors and handed the winless Juniors an 8-1 defeat. Mark Goreski started on the hill for Greenbank and pitched five scoreless innings. Ken Goreski came on in relief and finished the game. Dan McCormick and Jason Canauan shared the pitching duties for Markham-Claremont. Long Ball hitting for the Gamblers were Trevor Till, Don Beaton and George Redshaw. Red- shaw hit a ball out of the Claremont Park which is a rarity in the big ball park. Don Phinney, Neil Rodd, Red- shaw, Beaton and Trevor Till pick- ed up a pair of hits during the game with Greg Rodd, Rodd Real and Terry Till hitting safely once. The win and tie allowed Green- bank to slip into first place in the Oshawa City & District "A" League as Stouffville lost to the Port Perry Eagles and have dropped one point behind the Gamblers. It is now tournament time for the Greenbank squad and almost every weekend from now until the middle of September will see the Gamblers in action somewhere in Ontario. Ready for anything Greenbank Pee Wees On Tuesday July 22, the Green- bank All Stars travelled to Union- ville to do battle with the leading contender for first place in the York- Durham League. .. Greenbank got off to a 3-0 lead up until the 5th inning when Unionville woke up and caught Greenbank sleeping for the first time of the season. They came back with 5 runs throughout their last 3 at bats to make the final score 5-3 in favour of Unionville. -However, this game helped Greenbank get off the pedestal of 1st place and to be tied with Unionville. Greenbank now knows to be ready for anything at anytime and has vowed to coach Loughran that they'll be ready for Unionville and any other team in the future. On Saturday, July 25, the Green- bank All Stars travelled to Belleville to play their 3rd tournament of the season. The first game at 8:00 in the mor- ning versus Tanworth resulted in a hard fought game with Greenbank winning 6-3. Greenbank runs were scored by Barclay Phoenix; John Ennis, John Chronis and Peter Loughran.. There was great field work by Chris Don- nelly and David Donneral as well as Tim Timms doing a super job behind the plate. The pitching was handled by fireballer John Ennis. He chalked up 6 strikeouts with 8 hits oi pb 5 innings. A job well In a second game of the tourny was against a powerful team from Belleville. John Ennis did his best on the mound for the first inning but still fell behind before ill-threatened Brett Puckrin came in and then left again 2 innings later because of fur- ther illness. Greenbank didn't have much of- fense to serve Belleville but did their best. This game resulted in a very bad loss for Greenbank. The third game was against a team from Springbrook and resulted in a very tight and well fought game resulting in Springbrook winning 5-4 in the last inning. The scoring started off when Chris Donnelly received a walk and John Ennis driving him home with a blast to centre field resulting in a triple. John Chronis and Ken Winslow then received walks loading the bases for Brett Puckrin. Brett singled to right field driving home 2 runs and mak- ing the score 3-0 in favour of Greenbank. Springbrook then came back with 4 unanswered runs until the top of the seventh when John Ennis scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 4. However, Springbrook, took the lead with 2 out and won the game 5-4. The star of the tournament | is John Ennis who pitched, hit and fielded 3 super games -- well done John! The Greenbank All Stars played fairly well throughout the tourna- ment but still need to brush upon a few things to hold a lead in a game. They hope they'll find lots of support from fans when they come home for future gdmes. Next Friday, July 31 is the date of the annual Greenbank Community Barbeque. In the past, the Green- bank Gamblers have provided the after dinner entertainment, but because of their generosity, they have allowed the Greenbank All Stars to host their second Ontario Amateur Softball Association Playdown game against Claremont. It is a best two out of three series with the first game in Claremont, Wednesday July 29. Our home game will be at 7:30 and could be the one that sends the All Stars to Springbrook for the Ontario Pee Wee D Fastball Championship. come out and see some great local fastball! Port Perry XL Eagles continued their improved league play by poun- ding out a decisive 10-2 victory over the league leaders from Stouffville last Wednesday night and then returning home the following night and edging the tough Oshawa ACL club 1-0 in a tight, cleanly played contest. At Stouffville, the XL Eagles jumped off to a quick start when lead off batter Colin Wackett singl- ed, Dave Dickson walked, Robert Evans was hit by the pitch, Lawrie Williams bunted out, but the Stouff- ville pitcher John Annis threw wild- ly to third base to double up Wackett and threw the ball away allowing the run to score. Next up was Bill Owen who laid down a perfect squeeze bunt bringing Dickson in to score. Stouffville came back in their half of the first inning with a homerun by Bruce Beare to make the score 2-1 for Port after one inning of play" In the third inning, Robert Evans walked, Lawrie Williams tripled and Bill Owen hit a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 4-1. In the seventh, Jay Williams singled, was sacrificed to second base by Bill St. John and driven home by a Wackett double. Inning eight saw more of the same as the Eagles continued to clout Annis around scoring three more runs. Again Rob Evans walked, Lawrie Williams singled, Bill Owen doubl- ed, Paul Graham singled and Jay Williams singled to produce the runs making the score 8-1. In Stouffville's half of the eighth inning, Gary Vaughan doubled, moved to third on an infield out and came home on pinch-hitter Jim Chilvers' fly ball. The ninth inning saw Wackett single, go to second when Dickson was hit by the pitch, reach third on a passed ball and scored on a double steal when the catcher elected to throw Dickson out a second. Reliever Jim Chilvers finally took over from Annis and was greeted with a long homerun by Lawrie Williams making the final score 10-2. Starting pitcher Lawrie Williams went seven innings with Ken Irvine coming on to throw the final two in- nings. Of note was a key defensive inning by Port in the sixth when fac- ed with a bases loaded situation with nobody out, Williams struck out Randy Grant, induced a grounder to Dickson at short who threw the run- ner out at the plate and a lazy fly ball to St. John in center to retire the side without any damage. Hilites in the game were Bill Owen's four RBI's, Colin Wacketts three hits, Lawrie Williams' three hits, including a homerun, Jay Williams' two hits and Rob Evans two walks and a hit baseman. At home Thursday night, the XL Eagles continue winning against top league teams Eagles hosted and beat ACL 1-0 on a two-hitter by Ken Irvine. Port's only run came in the fourth inning, when after one out Rob Evans singl- ed to center and Lawrie Williams singled to left field putting runners on first and second. After a fly ball out Paul Grahang strode to the plate and promptly stroked a single to center field allowing Evans to score with the winning run. Reliever Larry Elson came on in the sixth inning to toss two scoreless innings to pick up the save. This week Port Perry travels to Greenbank to take on the Gamblers in a league encounter Monday night. On the weekend the Eagles play host for the 14th annual Port Perry Fastball Tournament starting Fri- day night and finishing up Monday night. On Friday night the Eagles play their first tournament game and will feature Larry Elson in his first start for the Port squad after being away from home for the past eleven years. Hope to see lots of softball fans in the stands on the weekend as some of the best teams in the pro- vince will be on hand to play some exciting fastball for everyone.
