Harden the plants off to prepare them to withs- tand the stress conditions of transplanting. The objective is to reduce their rate of growth so they will have the resources to grow when planted in the field. This can be done by using any one or a com- bination of three techniques 7 to 10 before planting. Water lightly and at less frequent intervals. Expose the plants to lower than optimum temperatures. The third approach is to stop applying fertilizers, especial- ly nitrogen during the hardening process. Then, 1 to 2 days before field setting, apply a starter solution or liquid fertilizer so the plants can absorb it and have it available un- til they become established in the field. At planting time, include a starter solution in your transplan- ting water for an extra boost. In apple orchards, where there is a deficiency of magnesium or boron, growers should consider applying foliar nutrient sprays soon. The recommended rates and timings are outlined in the "1987 Fruit Produe- tion Recommendations' Publica- tion No.360. HORSES ARE BACK AT THE 1PM Horses are back at this year's In- ternational Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show (IMP), hosted by Grey County September 15-19, 1987. The Ontario Plowmen's Associa- tion (OPA) executive has accepted a proposal by The Co-operators General Insurance Company which will allow horse activities to return to Canada's largest farm show and plowing match, announced OPA General Manager, John Fennell. '1 am very pleased to announce that horses are back for the.1987 Match," Mr. Fennell said. "We have ac- | cepted a liability policy from the Co- operators of Guelph which will give us $5 million coverage that will in- clude horses at the Match." OPA President Albert Carson said having the horses back will be a real plus for the Match. "The beginning of the plowing match back in 1913 was all about horse plowing. It has grown since then to the modern, ad- vanced technology which the farm 'show brings to everyone today, but people still appreciate the originali- ty and beauty of the horse plowing. It really is a fine art that should never be lost." Last year, in Hastings County, marked the first time in the IPM's history that horses were not at the match, due to the high cost of in- surance premiums. Premiums to cover horses at the Match rose five "times the amount of the previous year's cost, forcing the OPA to eliminate the popular animals en- tirely. As a condition in the in- surance contract to allow horses at the matches, however, the helicopters had to be eliminated. "The helicopters have a tendency to-frighten the horses. So it was a choice of one or the other and we naturally chose the horses," Mr. Fennell said. Co-operators' Ontario Division Vice-president, Guelph, Bill Weafer, said his company is pleased that they could provide the OPA with the proper coverage to bring horses back. "We've had a long-time affiliation with agriculture, so we went out of our way to arrange a reasonable rate for coverage of horses this year. The Co-operators have always had a close tie with farmers and the IPM," Mr. Weafer said. '"Horse plowing and horses at the Match has always been a tradition with the IPM. It was unfortunate to see it lost last year, so we are more than delighted to have been able to help," Mr. Weafer added.
