16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 21, 1987 Lights didn't dim fun! { At first it looked like the Blackstock Fiddle Contest might be jinxed. Slightly more than half an hour before the contest was slated to begin, the power went out all over 3 & he Contest Saturday night. There's something about fiddle music that sets your foot to tappin' -- you just can't help yourself! At the Blackstock Fiddle Contest held Blackstock and surrounding area. Although he's just 14 years old, Shawn Mundell is pretty talented when it comes to fiddle playing. The Warsaw teenager won first prize in the 18 and under class at the Blackstock Fiddle The lights went out, the electric sound system wouldn't function, and the ceiling fans weren't able to cool off the 400 or so people who showed up to enjoy some good old-fashioned fiddle music. But in true country spirit, ¥ pa l al last Saturday night, the man, at right, showed off a few fiddling dance moves. S91 organizers did everything they could to "lighten up" the situation, bringing in camping lanterns, flashlights, and even opening a side door and shining car lights onto the stage to illuminate the cast of talented musicians. Organized by a committee of the Blackstock Agricultural Society in honour of the village's centennial year, the contest was a rousing suc- cess nevertheless, a spectacular first-time event that's likely to become an annual occasion. Many fiddlers from all over the province entertained the large crowd, which stamped its feet and clapped hands enthusiastically. And not too long after the contest began, Gerald Kelly saved the day with a borrowed electric generator. The power, by the way, eventually came back on at 9:25 p.m. (For results of the contest, see Joyce Kelly's Blackstock news in this week's edition of the Star.) Y oe » * --- Fo) 1 Scott Madill of Nestleton, his face set with determination, was a picture of concentration as he competed in the Over 60 class of the : Blackstock Fiddle Contest Saturday night. 1 Earl Giles heard about the Blackstock Fiddle Contest Satur- day morning on CBC radio, and decided, what the hey, he'd come up from his Scarborough home to compete. Turns out the deci sion was a good one, as he placed first in the Over 60 category.
