x v oi | 4 eo 3 A aC ER SN ETI HH AI THE TR ey . Go 5 mm ie 1 ia by Wendy Clark A lot of excitement and en- thusiasm was in the air during Nur- sing Home Week. We started off the celebration with our Father's Day Breakfast on Sunday, June 21. Some very special men started off their day with a delicious meal of scrambled eggs, sausages, toast, bran muffins, fresh fruit and refreshments. Each man received a goodie cup containing several han- dy items suitable for any male. While the cooks were cleaning up, Mr. Harvey Easton held a "Men's Gab." A very special thank you to the helpful volunteers that made this activity possible. - Monday afternoon we held our Strawberry Social. Everyone en- joyed their delightful strawberry shortcake while listening to the en- joyable piano playing by Mrs. Claire Whitter. Afterwards a game of Trivial Pursuit was in motion. Thanks to the Pineridge Garden Club for joining us during our gathering. Later on in the afternoon the fami- ly of the late Minnie Harper presented the activity department with a coffee maker. Thank you very much to these fine people. "Fundraising Day" was extreme- ly busy with many fun activities throughout the day. All money rais- ed on this day went to the Alzheimers Society. To begin our day we were happy to have Dr. Maureen Gorman from Whitby Physciatric Hospital speak to us on the ever increasing disease "Alzheimers." Several residents were involved in our sing-a-thon to which we raised $108.10. Good Work praises goes out to Mrs. Agnus MacLennon for raising the most money in sponsors. We also held a Chinese Mini-auction and raised another $58.00. A grateful thank you to all those who donated items for the auction. Church service in the evening was provided by Blackstock United Church. Octoberfest day was held on the 24th with our main attraction being a sausage making demonstration by Mr. Fred Balling. The residents really enjoyed their BBQ sausages with sauerkraut and a refreshing beer. We then watched some polkas being danced. The Pineridge Garden Club also stopped by to plant flowers throughout the several flowerbeds. Thank you -- We ap- preciate it. Thursday was "Family Day." The fun started with a Pet Show. Categories ranged from the most unusual pet to the most cuddlie pet. _ Several residents had"their portraits taken by Doug Potts of "Signature Studios." We then offered Clown face painting for children and residents. During the evening was an enjoyable "dessert social." Entertainment was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Harper. To end Nursing Home Week we celebrated one of the most impor- tant days. This-was Volunteer Ap- preciation Day. Each volunteer was addressed by our Activity Director and his or hers special volunteer duties were told about. Mr. Fred Balling was voted to be Volunteer Of The Year. Fred has helped us in many ways and at all types of jobs. Each volunteer received a gift and ~ then wine and cheese trays were served. The residents would like to send a special thank you to those volunteers that were unable to at- tend our gathering. We would like you to know that the time you have spent helping us is greatly appreciated. Monday June 29 we celebrated our Monthly birthday party. Our host for the afternoon was the Honeydale Woman's Institute. Everyone enjoyed joining in on a sing-song and ther listening to several readings and poems. The ladies then served us some delicious strawberry shortcake. A very warm thank you to this fine group. The following day, a couple of cars loaded up some residents and headed out for a morning of strawberry picking. During the PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 7, 1987 -- 39 afternoon they hulled and cleaned the berries and then presented them to the kitchen who served them for supper. After supper a church ser- vice was given by the Port Perry Baptist Church. . Naturally, Wednesday being Canada Day there were no activities scheduled so everyone just relaxed and enjoyed their mid-week holiday. Thursday, July 2 we celebrated Canada Day with a bash. Wine, ice tea and snacks were served. Everyone tested their skill at a Canada Quiz. A toast was made to Canada and we sang the National anthem. Friday we had Bingo. Congratula- tions to our lucky winners. Upcoming birthday wishes are ex- tended to Mr. Robert Newell (July 12), Mrs. Iris Freeman (16), and Miss Phylis Lambert (19). We would like to send out a warm welcome to Mrs. Mertie Stone and Mrs. Mable Burgess who have taken up residence here in the nursing home. Both of these ladies have come to us from the neighbourhood IF YOUR AD WAS HERE ... over 12,000 people could have read it this week! That's alot of potential customers for your business. Advertising made easy -- find out more about it! An exciting Nursing Home Week Villa. Upcoming events in July are: Flower & Vegetable Garden Show (July 8), Bahama Day (10), Trip to Canada Wonderland (14), Residents Council Meeting (16), Supper Club on the Road (16), and the Senior Citizen Picnic at the C.N.E. (22). Our sympathy goes out to the family of Mrs. Effie Ploughman who passed away at the hospital on June 19. Effie was with us for a good many years and all that knew her will certainly miss her. The residents and staff would like to say good-bye to one of our long- time staff members. Mrs. Eulah Johnson has recently retired and will be moving away to Orillia. We will all miss you Eulah and hope you are happy in your new home and surroundings. Just a reminder that we are still in need of Volunteers. If you can spare some time to assist senior citizens please give us a call. Con- tact: Kim Mitchell -- Activity Direc- tor (985-3205).
