30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 7, 1987 It's just down 'n dirty in the sexy race Things are getting down and dir- ty as the countdown begins to the last few days of politicking in the Sexy Man Sexy Woman Contest. Winning the contest, as everyone knows by now, is not a matter of be- ing sexy per se. The Sexiest Person in Scugog Township, the one who goes for glory, the mountain among men and women--will be the person who raises the most money. All the money raised goes to the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, which in turn zooms directly back into our community for all sorts of worthwhile endeavours (ie. Port Perry's streetlights, Canada Day fireworks, the Santa Claus Parade etc. etc.). "You'd think with all this money going towards such a good cause, the community, that the Sexy Man Sexy Woman nominees would be . more, how shall we say, "'community-spirited" whilst collec- ting votes (a penny per vote). Not so! Why, the politicking going on in this township is more fun than Watergate! More cut-throat than a good Monopoly game! More com- petitive than the Olympics! Contestants are out on the streets full force, bugging everyone they know (and don't know!) for votes. But it looks like their persistence has paid off. Chrystal Menzies, Sexy Single Female nominee, must have been doing a lot of canvassing to come up with the lead in the race (as of Mon- day morning, July 6). Chrystal, who offers the friendly smile behind the post office counter in Port Perry, has collected an amazing 29538 votes (that's $295.38). Nick Rensink, a well-known local builder, has been "building" up votes in a remarkable way, since he was nominated in the Sexy Senior Male category. In second place so far, only a few votes behind Chrystal, Nick has collected $222.52 (22252 votes). Roy Walker Smith is maintaining a loose third position with $110 (11000 votes), but he told the Star he's holding some back until the last minute, just to keep his competition (in the Sexy Father category) guessing. Roy, by the way, isn't the only cup 'EM HA WATTS PO BOX 2140 STATION "A MSW HY SEED COEDS ENS 0 GND § GED § GED S ND 0&0 With this coupon you pay only Es i B3 This coupon is worth 75C off the retail price of one package of ALWAYS Maxi 30, Thin 30, PLUS - $3.79 with .75¢ Coupon Valid only at BRUTON'S I.D.A. DRUG STORE 200 Queen Street, Port Perry 985-2511 candidate who admits to holding back. Several nominees have con- fessed to this game including Deb- bie Jones, nominated in the Sexy Service Club category because of her work for the Chamber of Commerce. #m, Debbie, so far, is ahead in her ~ category, but her only competition, also a member of the Chamber, is crying foul. - Bill Barr, a measly $14 or so behind Debbie, is trying his best to win the category, as is Debbie. The two of them, as a result, are offer- ing the most fun and the most politicking of the entire contest. Bill, you see, has been accusing Bethesda Reach Women's Debbie of doing all sorts of nasty things--namely, stealing his ballots from Stedmans and putting them in her own ballot box down at Lake Scugog Lumber. "Debbie Jones is a crook!" he blustered around the Star office Monday morning, huffing and puff- ing in fake outrage. Debbie, meanwhile, just laughed when she heard this. "I think the thing that bugs him Is running against a woman," she said with a hearty chuckle. As to the accusation, she replied, 'No, I am NOT stealing his ballots. A mother does not have time to be sneaky. I think it's funny. I lave it!" Speaking of sneaky, she may not have time to roust his ballot box, but she did have time to drop a balloon bouquet off on Bill's desk at Sted- mans, with the not-so-subtle message VOTE FOR DEBBIE writ- ten on it. This undoubtably riled Bill to new heights of anguish. Meanwhile, other candidates are going about their fundraising in other ways. Joy Werry (Sexy Single Female) and Cathy Olliffe (Sexy Professional) combined forces and held a car wash at Dennis Anderson Chev Olds last Saturday. About 15 drivers had their cars washed and donated to the cause, while Joy and Cathy acquired sore muscles. Nick Rensink, however, doesn't have to wash cars to get ahead. Nick merely asks for votes--actually, he demands them, from everyone he bumps into (it's impossible to say no to this gentle giant). Rumour has'it he was collecting votes at church on Sunday. Whatever their method, con- testants had better get cracking, as time runs out on Saturday at 3 p.m. Epsom and Area News by Jean Jeffery The Bethesda Reach Women's In- stitute enjoyed a wonderful supper & evening entertainment at Cullen's Gardens last Thursday. It is also the last time people's tallies will be made public. After Thursday at 5 p.m., it becomes a guessing game so nobody can come in at the last minute and write a che- que to win.
