Kim McLaughlin, 17, had her hands full with cabbage during Pioneer Days last weekend, making sauerkraut the old-fashioned way. She says all you have to do to make your own is chop cab- "bage, pound it until it's watery, add coarse salt and then seal it . and store it in a dark place for eight weeks. The vote to reject the proposal came Monday evening and was car- ried by all members of council. Ward 3 councillor Don Cochrane was absent from the meeting when the vote was called and Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor was not re- quired to vote as it was not by recorded ballot. Two weeks ago, council turned down the proposal, and at the meeting last week a petition with some 700 names in favour of the pro- ject was presented. The project was-proposed by the Pedestrian mall would link Mary and Casimir A pedestrian-type mall stretching from Mary Street to Casimir Street received many fovourable com- ments from council Monday morn- ing, as architect Allan Wilcox unveiled the plan. Mr. Wilcox, along with David Litt and John McDougall of Port Perry are proposing the mall which would include a number of boutique-type shops as well as some office space and apartments. The proposed mall is located on the old 'DéNure" property and runs from the former residence on Mary Street through to Casimir Street. In proposing the complex, Mr. Wilcox informed council that they intend to use the buildings which already exist on the property, with extensive modifications and some small additions. Although some members of coun- cil had some minor concerns, they were overall very receptive to the "plan. Councillor Howard Hall com- . mented "this is a very interesting concept for further commercial development in the downtown core." The development, which is to utilize the existing buildings will be linked north to south with an in- terlocking brick pedestrian walk- way, and a road for cars which will wind through the mall. Scugog's planner, John McDer- mott of Totten, Sims, Hubicki said the proposal is a "rather exciting (Turn to page 3) Parish of Immaculate Conception Church with support from the Toronto Diocese. Members of coun- cil have felt all along that with a church and elementary school already built on the land, there is not sufficient space for a 42 unit seniors apartment. Although he did not vote at Mon- day's meeting, Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor said he "has some sym- pathies for the proposal." "How many places are left in Port Perry where we (council) could put _ seniors housing on full municipal services,' he stated. Township planning consultant John McDermott has expressed strong reservations about the pro- Catholic 'seniors apartment project ject from the outset. Again at Mon- day's meeting, he repeated his con- cerns from a planning perspective. "There is just too much develop- ment for that property," he said. The motion to uphold the original denial from two weeks ago was made by Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie who said she "has given - this (issue) a great deal of thought and I still feel it is just plain wrong." There is a very real possibility this issue will ultimately be decid- ed by the Ontario Municipal Board. At the council meeting June 30, lawyer .Myrna Lack, representing the Parish strongly suggested an OMB hearing would be requested if council failed to change its decision. only.
