24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 30, 1987 cs Port Perry Star Sports Aurora upsets Oshawa for gold ce a --r ne _ Port Perry Legion Branch 419 Squirt Softball team held a very suc- cessful tournament on Saturday and Sunday as five teams from Oshawa, Aurora, Newmarket, Bracebridge and Port Perry fought it out for top honours. In the first game on Saturday morning the local team, handed Oshawa its first loss of the season as - they troused the boys from the "motor city' by a 10-2 score Jeff Card pitched a strong game as he allowed only three hits and struck out nine Oshawa batters. The Port Perry boys scored three runs in the first inning on singles by Duane. Empringham and Simon Traynor and doubles by Gavin Cochrane and Chad Venning. Kent Jamieson added a long homerun in .the sixth inning. Chad Venning and Simon Traynor had three hits each while Gavin Cochrane, Cory Pee Wees take Bricknell had two hits each, Todd Smart and Greg Rankin added singles . In the second game played in the morning Aurora easily defeated Newmarket by a 15-1 score. Playing their second game of the ~ moming, the Port Perry Squirts fac- ed Bracebridge and handed them a 13-5 defeat, while Oshawa knocked off Aurora by a 9-3 count. Chad Venning picked up the win for Port Perry as he allowed five hits and struck out nine batters. Scott Wylie and Duane Empr- ingham each had two. hits with Jeremy Norton, Grant Kay, Chad Garvock, Gavin Cochrane, Kent Jamieson, Adam Johnston, Greg Rankin each adding singles. Oshawa Shamrocks defeated Aurora by a 9-3 score. and Bracebridge and Newmarket were "© the gold medals Near flawless defense, fine pit- ching and clutch hitting helped the Port Perry Pee Wee MoJacks win their first tournament of the season in Gravenhurst over the weekend. Coach Ron Redman had nothing but praise for the way his team per- formed as the MoJacks won the championship game by a®-0 score over Claremont. They got to the "final with 6-0 wins over Bracebridge and a 10-2 drubbing of favoured Unionville Mike Feasby was superb on the mound in the final as he fanned 12 Claremont batters, while giving up only a lead-off single and a walk in the third inming. Paul Smith-hat a home run and Steve Laird rapped out a double Feasby also went the distance in the win over Unionville with ten K's on a fine two-hitter. Steve Laird had a great game at the plate with seven = 'Wee MaJacks romped over Aurora RBI's on two homes and a single Paul Smith hit two singles and a double in the opening game against Bracebridge. Ric hard Brough fired There are §till a few openings left for foursomes in the John Baker Memorial Golf tournament to be played this coming Saturday (July 4) at the Sunnybrae course in Prince Albert. This is an annual tournament with all proceeds turned over to assist the mentally handicapped in Durham Region. Over the years, thousands of dollars have been raised at Sun- ybrae for this worthy cause For Saturday's tournament. there are two draws, one starting at 8:00 am. and the other at 1:00 pm a two-hit shut out while sending six batters down on strikeouts. Steve Laird again was the big gun at the plate with three RBI's on a single, double and triple. Ryan Picard pro- Squirts settle for Consolatio rained out after 2 innings and the tournament had to be rescheduled for Sunday noon hour. Bracebridge was unable to com- pete on Sunday morning so a draw of the four remaining teams was made with Oshawa playing Port Perry and Newmarket playing Aurora in semi-final play. The Oshawa "Shamrocks" -- Port Perry Legion game turned out to be the game of the tournament as" Jeff Card of Port Perry and Bill Tit- tedon matched each other in a fine pitchers dual, with Oshawa scoring two runs in the top of the seventh in- ning to defeat Port Perry by a 54 ~- game and move on into the cham- pionship game against Aurora who easily defeated Newmarket by a 13-3 score. : Simon Traynor had two hits for _ Port Perry in the Oshawa game with Chad Venning, Gavin - Cochrane, Cory Bricknell, and Greg Rankin each-having one hit for Port Perry. In the Championship game in a slight upset, Oshawa by a 74 score and in the Consolation final Port Perry took 'out some of its frustration as they blasted Newmarket by a 25-5 score. Aurora took home the gold medals while Oshawa earned the silver and Port Perry the bronze. The coaching staff was - pleased with the team as they won = vided some fine defense with his , 3 games and lost only the heart- » play at second base. - Richard Brough had just a great game pitching as this was just his second start this year. Coach. Redman said he 'was delighted with the way his team played in the field committing just two errors in the three-game tour- nament. Ryan Picard, Brad Moase, Paul Smith and Steve Laird handl- - ed the in-field chores. , Jason Cochrane and Scott Maclennan shared the catching duties, while Dave Hopmans, Jason McBride and Jeff Brett tracked down the fly balls to the out-field "In league play last week. the Pee 154 but on Friday night they gave up some unearned runs en route to a 3-1 loss to their "cross-town rivals' from Greenbank.
