About 40 people, including several teenagers turned out for an informal first meeting to discuss the pro blems of alcohol use and abuse among young people. The meeting was organized by a group calling itself "Concerned Parents' and one of the main aims of the group is to try to steer teenagers away from alcohol use. It is also a self-help group in which parents can exchange information and support if they know or suspect their teens may be using alcohol. One of the organizers said after the meeting she was generally pleased with the discussion, but she hopes more parents will make a Students return (From page 1) A full program of events has been planned and is printed elsewhere in this paper and the weekend will be highlighted by the opening ceremony at one o'clock on Satyr: day at the sports field. People atten- ding this event are reminded to bring a lawn chair. As well as basketball games, - entertainment groups and the meet- the-teacher reception, the decade rooms with their displays of memorabilia will provide an oppor- tunity to reminisce and renew ac- quaintances with old friends. Tickets for the various dances will be sold at the school by represen- tatives of the organizations sponsor- ing these events and bells, memory books, sweatshirts and other souvenirs will also be available. The committee hopes that not just former students but the whole com- munity will catch the school spirit and help to make the weekend a SUCCess. commitment to get involved and join the group. She said another meeting will be held July 15 at the Anglican Church Hall in Port Perry (at 8:00 PM) and teenagers who want to discuss this issue and present their views and opinions are more than welcome to attend. At the meeting last Thursday night, part of the discussion centred around why a 13 or 14-year old may feel a need to consume alcohol One speaker noted that the teen years are a time of marked physical and emotional growth and change. They should also spend as much time as possible with their kids and not be shy about praising them for their positive accomplishments. "Take the time to talk to your kids about anything and everything, especially if you think they may be having problems with something," said one speaker. Some of the signs to watch for if a teen is using alcohol extensively are changes in personality, out bursts of violence, a desire to withdraw from family activities and a penchant for secrecy. Sgt. Ken Hudson of the Durham Region Police was an invited guest speaker at the meeting last week and he cautioned parents that if they plan to leave home for a weekend, make sure that someone responsi- ble is in control of the house. And Sgt. Hudson said that if a teen party at a private home starts to get (Turn to page 8) PORT PERRY HIGH SCHOOL 'REUNION PROGRAM FRIDAY, JUNE 26th, 1987 © 6:00 to 9:00 PM -- Registration, Decade Rooms 7:30 PM -- History of PPHS Slide Show, Room 114 7:30 PM -- Country Chords, Gym AB 8:00 PM -- Touch of Class, Gym AB 8:30 PM: -- Basketball Game, Gym AB, 11978 COSSA Boys vs. 1987 Senior Boys SATURDAY, JUNE 27th, 1987 9:00 AM to 7 PM -- Registration, Decade Rooms A -- Portrait Studio, Library -- Scugog Shores Museum Display 10:00 AM -- History of PPHS Slide Show, Room 114 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM -- Entertainment in Auditorium : (10:30 to 10:45 - Candy Stevenson) (11:15 to 11:30 - Daryl Leatherdale 'Jerry Lee Lewis') 12 15 to 1:00 PM -- Gathering of Clan, Sportsfield % -- Jack & Ted Griffen and PPHS Band 1:00 PM -- Official Opening, Sports.
