Durham Region and Durham Recycling have an agreement. whereby the company will re imburse the Region for the cost of the trucks : The eight vehicles, to be used to pick up recyclable trash from " homes, will cost about $493,000. The Durham council was told last week that grants from the provin- cial government should cover about $330,000 of this amount However, those grants have yet to be approved, and if they fail to come through, the Region will lease the vehicles at a cost of $119,000 annual- ly for five years. Despite the fact the Region and Durham Recycling have an agree- ment already worked out, several members of council raised some questions last week about the Region's financial commitments to this project. Ux- bridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor also questioned whether or not Durham Region will get all the money back it spends to get the recycling venture off the ground. And Oshawa councillor Doug Wilson asked that the recommenda- tion to acquire the trucks be refer- red to the finance committee for a report in the financial self- sufficiency of Durham Recycling. His request was rejected by the council. : Scugog councillor Lawrence Malcolm argued that the Region now has no choice but to acquire the trucks for Durham Recycling.
