Eagles came in a tired, but well earned second place 8 in the Geordie Easton Fastball Tournament held in Oshawa over the past weekend losing to Oshawa ACL in the final 8-3. Having led 3-1 going into the fourth inning, the well rested Oshawa team finally wore Port down with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim top "prize while playing only three games while the Eagles had played five Catcher Robert Evans topped his weekend off with a three run homer in the final and picking up a trophy for the tournament's Best Sportsman . To get into the final, the XL Eagles faced the Eringate Team from Etobicoke on Friday night win- ning 4-3 with two runs scored in their last at bat when Rick Evans' sacrifice fly brought in the tying run and Bill Owens' single knocking in the winning run . Early Saturday morning the op- position was the Stouffville Team led by ace pitcher Jim Chilvers. The © game was evenly played throughout with the challengers cashing in five runs to Ports two Dropping into the losers' bracket saw the Eagles play Orono and soundly defeat them 7-0 on Paul "Graham's nifty two-hitter. This also marked the return of Bill St. John from the DL list, playing i in his first game this year for the Eagles. In the semi-finals Port again hooked up with Stouffville who had First tournament lost to ACL and defeated Green- bank. Chilvers was again on the mound for the Betz boys and Port replied with Lawrie Williams Stouffville jumped off to a quick two run lead in the first inning as Port's starter Lawrie Williams re-injured a groin muscle and was replaced by Ken Irvine. Port fought back with Ken Bryant scoring in the third and fifth innings to tie the score 2-2. In the sixth inning after two were out, Jay Williams singled and Bill Owen walked setting the stakes for Ken Irvine to win the game which he promptly did by pounding a single up the middle scoring both runs to give Port the victory: 4-2 in an exciting semi-final game. As mentioned previously, Oshawa 'ACL was deserving of the cham- pionship having defeated Orono, Stouffville and Port on their way to an undefeated tournament. League Play Back 1n league play Eagles had their best week to date as they registered wins over Green- bank 7-5 and Claremont Juniors 7-2. . In a sloppily plaved game in Greenbank, Port capitalized on some erratic Gambler play scoring five times in the third inning to take a 64 lead. At the present time the XL Eagles fortunes are on the upswing as they continue their fine play of late. On the weekend coming up the squad heads for Elmvale to par- ticipate in an open tournament featuring the best intermediate teams from around the Toronto and Barrie areas. In league play Port Perry travels to Claremont Wednesday night and returns Thursday night for a 8:30 encounter with the first place Stouff- ville team. This game should be a tight affair as each team has a vic- tory from the past weekend tourna- ment in Oshawa. ~ The Greenbank Gamblers were a jubilant lot Saturday afternoon at the Easton tournament in Oshawa when Rod Real cranked a grand slam homer to tie the score 5-5 with Stouffville in the come with a win as Stouffville took the game in extra innings. The Port Perry XL Eagles, however, doubled Stouffville 4-2 to advance to the semi finals against Oshawa Who won the tournament. The home team opened the scor- ing in the first inning when they bun- ched three hits to score 2 wins, but in the top of the second inning the Legion boys exploded for 8 runs and were never behihd in the game- Aurora battled back but strong pitching of Jeff Card held them in check for the win. Symon Traynor led the hitting for Port Perry with a pair of homeruns while Scott Wylie and Gavin Cochrane each had a home run Duane Empr- ingham, Greg Rankin and Chad Venning each had singles This was Port Perry's 7th win without a loss On Thursday night playing at home the Legion Squirts blasted . Woodbridge by a score of 18-1 with pitcher Jeff Card throwing a no-hit game and had 13 strikeouts Jeremy Norton led the hitters with.three hits as did Cory Bricknell and Greg Rankin Chad Venning, Scott Wylie. Todd Smart and Adam Johnston had 2 the hits each. Chad Garvock, Gavin Cochrane and Duane Empringham had one hit each. Playing their third game of the week on Wednesday night the Legion boys travelled' to Newmarket and defeated them by a score of 19-10 with Chad Venning picking up his third win of the season, as he struck out 9 batters but needed relief help from Jeff Card in the seventh inning Symon Traynor again led the hit parade with five hits in five times at bat, while Todd Smart and Jeremy Norton had three hits each ~ Re-Match Thursday Thus Thursday evening the Legion Squirts will be playing a re-match with the Aurora Club and this should be another exciting game as the tWh teams are evenly matched. On Saturday June 27 the Port Perry Legion 419 Squirts will be hosting a one day tournament at the lakefront park with teams com- peting from Oshawa, Bracebridge, Newmarket, Aurora and the host team from Port Perry. This should be an exciting day of softball action with the games starting at 9 0 "clock in the morning and the champion- ship game slated to start around 5 0 clock in the afternoon.
