One hospital employee was out canoeing through the fog at 7:15 in the morning! Mary Page was the first to phone in at 7:03 a.m., and the Phantom Himself (it was a male voice) phon- ed in at exactly 12:45 to report 15 minutes of Phantom Exercises (whatever they are). At 8 p.m_, the Fittest People con- test winners were announced with Jack Cottrell voted the Fittest Man; ~ Marg Sanders the Fittest Woman; and the 'family' of R.H. Cornish Public School as Fittest Family. Emiel's Place Restaurant won'the car tug; the Hospital Board won the Fill The Barrel contest; Lake Scugog Lumber won the boat tug; Mike Griffen and Tyler Philp won the canoe race; Elgin Knopp won the Rock-a-tha-lon; Sharyl Bell and Sue Brown wen the Frisbee Toss; Mayor Jerry Taylor was cer- tainly kept hopping all day long, participating in nearly every event going. Laurie Gladish won the hula hoop contest; Alan Calder and Michael O'Connel won the three-legged race: Melissa Moehring and Jeff Parry won the water balloon toss: James Gouldburn and Chris Donnelly won the potato sack/wheelbarrow race: Wolfgang Palleske's team won the Durham Regional Police tug of war - and Don Steele's team won the Fire Department's Charged Hose contest. And more than 100 people, young and old; showed up to take part in the Caesarea Fire Department's Challenge Walk, led by Chief Len Scott. Of course, no one was more en- thusiastic than the two cheerleading teams from Port Perry High School. who 'participated and cheered in nearly every event held on Challenge Day. "They were fantastic," said Mayor Jerry Taylor. 'Sometimes. like during the rain, they were our only audience." Overall, organizers are calling Scugog"s first Challenge Day a suc- cess, and a Kit is being prepared so next year's Challenge Day will be even better. Mayor Taylor says the communi- ty has learned from the experience. and "I think we can pull it off even better, with less work, next year." The cheerleading guys from Port Perry High School made quite an impression, from their hearty cheers of encourage- ment to their boundless energy and amazing pyramid. ER RE Cs ak Ee had .
