Every year the tournament is organized to raise money for the Easter Seals, and last year the Port Perry Star team won it handily. This year however, the good guys lost by two strokes. The winners are Brian Nicholson, Cy Elsey, Al Mason and Doug Wilson, pictured with the 1986 Ontario Tammy, Cora Malischewski. The real winners, however, will be all the kids helped by Easter Seals (the tourna- ment raised $540 at the Port Perry Mini-Putt Saturday morning). Greenbank Gamblers split games to open season The local fastball season is swing- ing in to high gear and the Green- bank Gamblers have one loss after their first two league games in Oshawa City and District "A" Divi- sion play. In their home opener at Green- bank Park the Gamblers did not have the bats working at all as they were shot out by John Annis and his Stouffville team mates by a 2-0 score. Annis fired a one hitter at the Greenbank squad as Trevor Till was the only Gambler batsman to hit safely. The Gamblers have had a winning streak going against Annis that dates back to the 0.A.S.A. finals in 1982 when John was pit- ching for the Brooklin Legion team but on this night he over powered the Greenbank batters and record- ed the shutout. In addition to John Annis the Stouffville team have also signed 'Jim Chilvers from last years Oshawa Seniors and are reported to have a left hander as well so this Stouffville squad could be a * powerhouse in the Campbell Divi- sion this year. Eagles limping The Port Perry XL Eagles have started the season off slowly by dropping their first two league games 8-4 to Stouffville and 3-0 to the Oshawa Juniors. Home against Stouffville last Thursday night the XL Eagles fell behind 4-1. By the second inning on sloppy fielding on one particular play committing four infield errors. After coming back with three runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to 5-4, Stouffville scored three more in the ninth inning for a convincing 84 victory. Port Perry pitcher Ken Irvine started and was relieved in the ninth inning by Lawrie Williams, with Ir- vine taking the loss. Port managed only to get four hits all night with Dave Dickson, Larry Pilkey, Jay Williams and Rick Evans each get- ting singles. On the previous Tuesday night in Oshawa, the XL Eagles had their 'league opener falling 30 to the Juniors as their ace pitcher John Cook fired a nifty one hitter. Oshawa scored once in the first inning and twice in the third inning to breeze to victory. Port Perry managed a first inning single by Dave Dickson and two walks later in the game. Paul Graham was the XL Eagles starting and losing pitcher with Lawrie Williams in relief. On the Victoria Day Weekend the Port Perry boys attended the annual Bradford Fastball Tournament and played two games; losing 5-0 to the Toronto M ts and losing an ex- -tra inning affair to Guelph 2-1. In the fourth inning Stouff- ville scored the only two runs of the ball game when a combination of a windblown bloop single, an infield error and some timely hitting gave Stouffville the win, At Durham Fields last Tuesday night the Gamblers met a short handed Oshawa MCL Junior team and the bats were booming in Oshawa as Greenbank took a lop sided 12-0 win. Ken Goreski started 'on the hill for Greenbank with Jim Cook handling the Oshawa pitching chores. Mark Goreski came on in relief in the 5th inning to preserve the Gambler shutout. Oshawa managed two singles dur- ing the game while every hitter in the Greenbank lineup contributed to the attack. Don Phinney had a three for three night at the plate with Trevor Till and Don Beaton each having a pair of safeties. Rodd Real chipped in with a home run and Neil Rodd, George Redshaw, Greg Rodd, John Foster and Terry Till all hit safely. The new Gambler battery of Mark Goreski and Brian Henricks is look- ing better every time out and will give opposition batters plenty of pro- blems this season. The injury jinx has hit the team early this year with Brian Till (crushed finger) and Hugh Johnston (bruised ribs) sidelined for an in- . definite period. Good news for the Gamblers is the signing this week of fire baller Ran- dy Underwood who will be . remembered for his classic match up with Greenbank ace Russ Kor- bak last year in O.AS.A. zone competition. This game went 18 scoreless inn- ings before Don Beaton's dramatic home run in the bottom of the 18th inning gave Korbak and the Gamblers the victory. Team captain Andy Sutch and all , Star defenseman Darren Nesbitt shared the coveted Most Valuable Player trophy. These two players were the heart and soul of the team all year long and richly deserved to share the MVP honours. Greg Warriner was a double trophy winner for his efforts on the ice this past season. He was award- ed the Ballard and Carnegie trophy as the best team player and the Vaughan McKee Memorial award for outstanding dedication and hard work. - The rookie of the year award went to forward John Hartford who gave 110 per cent every time he stepped on the ice. John was also named a co-winner with Rick Wilson as the best defensive player for the 86-87 season. The Watts Family trophy for the most improved player was Brian Stevenson, a unanimous choice. Along with the outstanding player awards, the team presented plaques to coaches Burnett and Olsen, manager Bob Jamieson and Denny Martyn and Carl Luke who handle the equipment. Gord Mahaffey also received a plaque for his work as trainer this past season. The evening was MC'd by Wayne Venning who has performed these duties since the awards banquet started some 15 years ago.
