CH rae Or i i al 4 Port Perry Star PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 20, 1987 -- 23 Arm wrestlers lock wrists for cash, trophies Crandell's Restaurant in Port Perry was the scene Saturday after- noon as about 40 competitors put their strength and skill to the test in arm wrestling competitions. In several different weight categories, the arm wrestlers were competing for trophies and cash prizes of $20 for the winners and $10 for second place. Each competitor put up an entry fee of $10. Arm wrestling is a sport rapidly growing in popularity and for most of the afternoon, there was a respec- table crowd on hand to cheer on their favourites. Sih ed aie Goi 'While the competitors strain every muscle to win a match, the referees have a tough job making sure there are no rules violations. Dennis Menard and Mike Kucherik of Oshawa handled the ref's duties on Saturday. Mike Haigh of Scugog Isiand has taken up arm wrestling in a serious way over the past year or so, and he's won several top flight competi- tions in the light-weight class. Rick Erwin of Oshawa, who seems to be a perennial winner in area competitions, won the heavyweight class over Kevin Malcolm, and Rick also picked up | top spot in the middle weight category by defeating Garth Karlson Mike Klock of Port Perry won the fly-weight class with a successful pull against John Muise. And in the ladies competition, Darla Tillings of Blackstock defeated Cheryl Doher- ty of Port Perry. There was an open weight com- petition for the southpaws and - David Lynde of Little Britain came away a winner as he defeated Mark McConnel in the finals. Many of these competitors will be taking part in the arm wrestling meet slated for the Festival Days Weekend in Port Perry in mid-July. The action will take place in the Festival Days tent in Palmer Park. If you've never seen a serious arm wrestling competition, this will be a great chance to find out why this sport is catching on.
