Cornish School in Port Perry. All the teams enjoyed good success this year (some more than others) and the coaches say the players represented their school and com- munity with keen corgpetition and good sportsmanship. The following is a synopsis of how the teams fared in basketball com- petitions this past season. Grade 6 Jr. Boys The Junior Boys Basketball team "at Cornish continued its winning ways this year. They played several exhibition games with schools throughout the region winning most of them. To become Durham Central Champions, the team had to play a round robin tournament at Cart- wright Public School. The team -easily won the tournament and then defeated Cartwright P.S. in the championship game that decided the Feprescntative for the Durham finals. At the Durham finals the team played well beating Bayview and Southwood but lost to a strong Wood- crest team. This eliminated them from further competition. Grade 8 Intermediate Boys The Intermediaté Boys Basket- ball squad played well this vear. The team won championships in the Nor- thern Classic, the St. Johns Invita- tional and the Courtice Invitational" basketball tournaments. In the Durham Region playdowns, the boys were zone winners and con- cluded their season finishing second '# # in the Major School finals and se- cond again in the All-Durham ~ Championship.' The boys represented Cornish and Scugog Township in sporting and winning style. They deserve our congratulations on a fine season. Well done boys! Grade 7 Boys The Gr. 7 Boys team played in three nein. this year. a) St. Johns Invitations! (bronze), b) Dr. Robert Thornton Invitational . (gold), ¢) H.W. Knight Invitational (winner) In the St. Johns Tournament, Cor- nish won the bronze medal led by coach Kiezebrink and the gold medal at the Thornton Tournament led by coach R. Smart and coach Brownson. The team is well balanced in drib- blers and shooters -and shows pro- mise of being a top contender next - year in the Durham Region. Grade 8 Intermediate Girls The Intermediate team qualified for the D.E.A.A. finals. They won the "A" championship at the Nor- thern Classic Tournament at Brock High School. d The girls completed their -suc- cessful year by capturing the "A" championship at the Courtice In- vitational. Tournament. Congratula- tions to all the girls for their dedica- tion and excellent effort! . Grade 7 Girls Port Perry Tournament Gold Medal Champions on Saturday April 25. This is a strong team who should provide some excellent results as Grade 8 players next year. ' Grade 6 Girls A most successful season as they won 15, lost 4 and tied 1. They won our area as Durham Central Champions. In the All Durham Region Tour- - nament they captured a third place finish. This is a fine Junior team who represented R.H. Cornish well. | Ch iefs win Jr. crown The Lakefield Chiefs have won the Ontario Junior C Hockey crown, thanks to a 4-3 weekend victory over the Norwich Merchants. : The Chiefs, who play in the Cen- tral Jr., C League, knocked Norwich out four games to two. After losing the first game of the series, the Chiefs bounced back and one of the victories was by a score of 6-5 in double over-time. Tennis Racket The Port Perry Tennis Club held it's annual general meeting at the Masonic Hall on April 29, 7:30 p.m. Old and new members signed up for another season; reports were given on upcoming tournaments, lessons - - for members, ladies league, Kawar- tha League, the Monday Night 'Fun' League, our involvement in the Par- ticipaction Challenge on May 27 and a 'junior league program,' the lat- ter being something new this year beginning in July. Heather McCrae was the lucky winner of the draw - '6 weeks of free tennis lessons.' It was rumoured she needed them so they couldn't go to a more deserving person!' A work party was held at the courts on Saturday to put up the windscreens, install a new bulletin board and general clean-up around the courts. Our first Fun Tournament is be- ing held on May 17. Beth Charles and Tony Tenwesteneind are runn- ing this tournament so come on out for a day of 'fun and frolic' at the courts. A sign-up sheet has been posted at the courts for members wishing to play Monday Night League. The deadline is May 25 and the league commences on June 1, 7 p.m. The emphasis for this league is strictly on FUN. Don't worry about your level of play as participation and fun will be the 'order of the day.' A sign-up sheet has also been posted for anyone interested in play- ing competively in the Kawartha League. It's expected this league ac- tion will commence around the end of May or early June. " * Plans are into gear for our in- volvement with the Participaction Challenge on May 27. Let's face it - Scugog will be the fittest municipali- ty -- we're challenging everyone in Scugog to come to the courts and play 15 minutes of tennis -- for fitness, of course. Remember, tennis is the 'sport of a lifetime'
