Above, vo No clues to fire (From page 21) He does know the fire started in Shrum's living room area, but other . than that, '"We have no clues." Owner Don Shrum told the Star he "also had no idea why the fire started. "We (him and boarder Paul Robinson) got up at 6:30 (a.m.) and everything was fine. We didn't have breakfast or anything so nothing was left on," he said. The house was Shrum's first home, and the young IGA employee "had just recently completed an ad- dition in the bathroom, as well as drywall in the kitchen. He had own- ed the lakefront property for only - - his car, a 1977 Sunbird, and a five months. : "Somebady called me at work and said, your house is burning," a visibly upset Shrum said at the scene. 'When I got here, it was still intact, but in flames. I cried." His neighbour, Cathy Azzopardi, called firefighters when, *'I saw the smoke coming, and at first I thought he (Shrum) had stayed at home and was cleaning the yard. Then I realiz- ed what was going on and phoned. There was nothing left of his home = by the time they (firefighters) arrived." She complained it seemed to take forever for firefighters to arrive. (It took 12 minutes) . "I was standing on the road, jum- ping up and down, wondering Where they were.' About Shrum, she said, 'The poor: guy, he has the worst luck." As well as his home, Shrum lost snowmobile. His fellow staff members at the Port Perry IGA took up a collection for him, and insurance will pay for his losses, as well as the other homes and cottages involved. flames envelope what was once a recently renovated first home. 17% $ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 5, 1987 -- 25 Y 7 Uxbridge & District Chamber of Commerce | presents € snow May 21 22 & 23 Uxbrid BROUK ST.
