~ Obituary--George Kight [tis a rare privilege for one to be born, raised and to live on one's pro- perty for almost 94 years. George Kight was one of the chosen few who lived on the family farm until Feb. 11, 1987, passing away at Oshawa General Hospital He was Utica Community's oldest honorary citizen, born in 1893 to parents Wm. and Margaret Kight, who had settled on the Kight farm .south of Utica in early years. His mother was an early widow w ith the responsibility of rajsing the young family of 5. George and twin brother, Frank set the pace of get- ting some schooling and trying to do their bit at home as young boys, helping the survival of hardship years. Gifted with a very alert and remarkable memory, he could recall his barefoot walks to school, could remember his teachers and at age 12 asked to help with the sawmill operations at nearby Cairn's Mill. He had a clear picture of other early sawmills i in the area, now long gone. He was a longtime supporter of both Utica Churches, his last dona- - tion given a few days before his passing. George was only 6 when the first Utica Hall was built in 1899 and he could recall his father telling about the gala affair, climaxed by dinner and ball held at the Dafoe House (now Utica General Store). - He was a great visitor and was in- strumental in relating events and history for the Heritage Book and for that is owed a great. debt of gratitude. For years his old red truck was a familiar one at the Utica Store in the evenings when he and his cronies would gather to review the events of the week. When the truck gave out, he drove his tractor which was replaced by walking for the past 4 ~ years. George remained a bachelor and lived alone for many years with his favourite dog, Mandy, whose in- telligence reflected true companion- ship. He was a regular attendant at Memory Hall activities and 'represented his family in communi- ty affairs and his visitors loved to hear the tales about *'Uticky' and Chalk Lake and often reflected of those who passed on, one by one, leaving him with fewer old neighbours but welcomed his new opes. His love for a "'steam engine" became a reality when he bought a Waterloo for $2500 and for many vears his threshing operation ser- viced the local community, and as ~ far as Whitby and Oshawa areas. He would blow the whistle : at the farmers' gates to let them know their turn. The steam engine, still in good repair, was replaced by trac- tor power in 1928 and in 1943 the threshing outfit found its final resting place at the Payne farm where they carried on the operation, George, experienced in logging and steam engines, spent sometime in the New Liskeard area 'where he operated the 'steamer.' To refresh his memory, in 1984, he was a special guest at the Bailey farm where a threshing outfit set up, and George delighted the " lookers by mechanism. When he retired, he . rented the land, later selling all but 30 acres of a very scenic acreage which he said he had had no time to sit and enjoy it. He had 2 memorable trips, one to the Calgary Stampede in 1964 with the Bryant boys, driv- ing for 43 hours, and too tired by then to see it; the other, bound for the Yukon with a neighbour but got only as far as Edmonton, the road was too bad. - Having remarkable health throughout his life, he kept up with the changes and when his niece, Bertha Meulemeester, her husband and son came to live at his home, he experienced all the comforts of a modern home. His motto in life -- "More than_you need, you don't want" says it all for his life. A long time member of the Orange Lodge, that service was held on Friday evening, Feb. 13, at the Wagg Funeral Chapel. Port Perry, followed by the funeral service ¢n Sat. Feb. 14th, St. Valentine's Day - a fitting one to keep in his memory; honorary pall-bearers -- Wilbur Partinder, James Kight, PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 28. 1987 -- 2 Doug Gower, Wm. Meulemeester, Tom Midgley, and Graham Fuller. "Everybody knew George and George knew everybody' and he will be long remembered by his many friends and relatives but will be missed, especially by the Meulemeester family and the fami- ly dog who still listens for his step and his voice. Predeceased by Wra., twin brother Frank, Alice, Bessie (Smith) and Annie (Milner) (Calgary), survived by relatives (Western Canada) and those in our local area. 4 He was laid to rest in the family plot in Breadalbane C. at Utica. explaining the - RUBBER STAMPS Fast Delivery "PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 DX OIL COMPANY A division of STEVA PETROLEUMS INC. - NOTICE - To those residents of Oshawa, Whitby and Brooklin .who may be confused about 'who' their fuel oil supplier is.
