gs E E EX Es Letters Canoe race changes To The Editor: It came with great surprize that | read a letter of resignation from the Chairman of the Canoe the Non- quon committee Rudi Jammer. As I have attended all meetings this year I know for a fact that a letter of resignation from Mr. Jammer . has, not been received by the Historical Society or the Canoe the Nonquon committee. Had Mr. Jammerydiscussed his feelings with the committee members in person, rather than writing a downgrading letter to the Port Perry Star editor, a solution to his problems and questions would have resolved. Mr. Jammer has based his letter and resignation on a discussion only, at our first meeting. At our second meeting, which Mr. Jammer did not attend, more ideas on the event were discussed. Most of the ideas were submitted in a letter to the editor of the Port Perry Star which appeared -in the March 17th edition. These ideas were discussed and voted on by the committee members present. Although all details of the ideas are not completely ironed out, the event is looking great. The main topic of that evening was starting a class for record time holders at the 8th concession as usual. When all pros and cons were discussed the committee members voted against this idea because of possible com- plieations on race day, such as con- fusion, manpower and expense. The record times of the "old" Canoe the Nonquon race will now become historic figures. It is true the 1987 paddlers will not have these record times to Leat. But the 1987 paddlers will become a part of history in the making. It will be the first year for the "'all new" Canoe 'the Nonquon with brand new record times achieved! Paddlers won't be... out on the river trying to beat past record times but to set new ones! How Exciting!!! We would however like anyone in- terested in competing in one class called "For The Record" to put their name, address' and phone number on a sheet which will be pro- vided at the Friday night registra- tion. If enough interest is shown to warrant the creation of such a class, serious consideration will be given to the committee members for the 1988 Canoe the Nonquon. We feel the decision to have the 14 years of age and under class at the lakefront not only a much safer location, but also one from which -parents, relatives and friends can watch and appreciate the efforts made by these prospective river paddlers. Although, Mr. Jammer, a person such as yourself would find no excitement or challenge in such an event, we think many youngsters will. I personally, along with many others take offence to your defini- tion of "'a lily dip course at the lakefront." A statement of this nature shows your concern is not with the Canoe the Nonquon.and to attract more participants to our event, but to satisfy yourself. The Canoe the Nonquon event is meant to be enjoyable for all pad- dlers. So, how many people want to take the one day event so seriously that a training program of "'pre- conditioning, jogging, pre-running the course, weight training etc.," must be followed? As I said before itis a One Day Event and if people feel that just to have some fun they 'must prepare with such intense training, the fun is lost. That is ex- actly what has happened to most of our paddlers from years past. Like yourself, Mr. Jammer, some pad- dlers do train and take racing seriously. The C2 class is ideal for you! You will race against other racers who often travel from town during the summer months to com- pete in races. Surely Mr. Jammer, with your experience in racing, 17 years of paddling in the Canoe the Nonquon, one would think you would be ready to advance to the challenge of the C2 class along with other ex- perienced racers, and. leave the Men's Residence class behind. Your question; and I quote, "Do they shorten the Boston Marathon because three runners out of 3,000 drop from exhaustion? is one that anyone with some common sense could answer. I am not involved with the Boston Marathon, but 1 think the answer would be No. I know that if we had 3,000 boats entered in Canoe the Nonquon and three boats dropped out, for' whatever reason, we would not shorten or change the event. In the past we have had the pleasure of, * hosting over 200 boats in our event. When we lost 50 boats we did "nothing. When we lost 100 boats we did nothing. We have now lost ap- proximately two thirds of the 200 boats that used to enter. We feel now is the time to reconstruct the event before we end up with another set of record Low entries. I would be guessing at this, but if the Boston Marathon lost 2,000 runners, that is two thirds of the figure you provid- ed, I am sure they would seriously consider some changes. After reading your letter Mr. Jammer, it appears to me that your main concern with Canoe the Non- quon is the glory of winning against as little competition as possible. However, you must be forgetting the true background and history of this event. It has the same objective this year as it did 18 years.ago. That is to raise money for the Scugog Shores Historical Museum, create fun and friendly challenge for pad- dlers involved and excitement for spectators. I would now like to extend an in- vitation to everyone interested in the Canoe the Nonquon to attend our next meeting.
