ER Ean Malcolm and Ivy Elford of Port Perry celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary Saturday at a family gathering at the home of their son Donald In an effort to get more people to participate, there will be several changes in the format of the historic Canoe the Nonquon event to be held June 6 this year. One of the major changes will be a reduction in the length of the course this year from 20 to 16 miles. The canoes will start at the 10th Con- cession, rather than the 8th and the finish line will continue to be .the traditional one at Palmer Park in Port Perry. Also this year for children 14 and under, there will be special canoe events held on the lake in front of Palmer Park. And for the serious Marathon Canoeracers (18'6"' C2 class) there will be a running start down Queen Street to the lakefront with the course to the Seagrave Bridge and back to Port Perry. The Canoe the Nonquon Commit- tee felt these and other changes are PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 17, 1987 -- 3 needed this year to stimulate more participation. The number of en- trants and community interest in general has been dropping in recent years and this has seriously affected the amount of money raised for the Scugog Shores Museum. The full reasons for these changes are outlined in a letter to the editor of this issue of the Port Perry Star. Changes planned for race But the changes have been con- troversial and Committee chairman Rudi Jammer has resigned because of them. Mr. Jammer, in a letter published in this week's Star (see letters page) states that shortening the race this year will detract from the tradition of the race and make the previous racing records obsolete. Murder case (From page 2) back and forth to school each day. The acquaintance said that after moving to Port Pérry late last fall, Ingrid continued to receive threatening phone calls from a man. Durham Regional Police have charged 34 year old Robert Ben- jamin Coleman of 120 Nonquon Road, Oshawa, with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the deaths. He is being held without bail in Whitby jail. Police believe Ingrid Kazin and her son had been dead for about 48 hours before their bodies were discovered at the townhouse in North Oshawa.
