-- PF so TR NE EW Ty WN TY ee A rink from Port thar Curling Club came up the winners of the annual Gord Lewis Texaco Mens Open Bonspiel held last Satur- day. Bonspiel chairman Ken Goreski presented the trophy to skip Jim Hopkins and team members Stephen Middleton, Bill redway and Darrin Gibson. There were 16 teams entered and he winning rink won three games and had 45 points, three bet- er than runner up Garnet Warriner and his rink. = In game one Galley and Smiths Contracting played a 'Iclose checking, hard fought game 'hich ended in a 1-1 tie. The lone 'Smarker for Galley was Mike Adam "from Pete Naumienko. Counting for Smiths was John Foster from Larry Page. Playing great between the "Doug MacSween. Game two was a hard fought, see ~saw battle in which BJ Donuts and "Crandell's Riverboat battled to a 44 -Stie. Scoring for BJ's were Bill "Bridge 1 goal, 2 assists; Dave 3 B ouregeois 1 goal, 2 assists; Wayne 'Taylor and Dale Bronson 1 goal each. Fighting back for Crandell's awere Ron Jeffrey 2 goals, 1 assist; JRichie LeFort 1 goal, 1 assist; Donavan Smith 1 goal. The boys played a good game against the Oshawa Canadians but both teams were evenly matched and the Canadians ended up one goal ahead at the end of the game. The score was 2-1 and Ken Winslow scored Port's only goal with the assist from Steve Laird. The team went on to face the home town boys from Beaverton. This ended up in a very lopsided match. Port came out with an easy 8-0 victory. The shots on net were, 424. Mark Andrews scored first goal with John Collins assisting on the goal. Within minutes of the first goal John Collins found the open corner of the Beaverton net to score again for Port. Greg Fitzgerald assisted on the goal. In the second period Mark An- drews' again scored with. a back hand shot after picking up the pass from Brett Puckrin. In the final period Ken 'Winslow again scored for Port on a backhand shot with the assist from Jan Heyes John Collins fired one in from the face off drop won by Mark Andrews Steve Staniland picked up a, great pass coming from the corner off John Collins stick. Then Jeff Parry got Port's final goal on a tipped in shot by Steve Staniland and John Collins also assisted on the goal. Congratulations to John Collins for playing an outstanding game and winning the MVP of the game. Port went into the final game against the Port Hope team and won with a 7-1 game. Jason Cochrane scored Port's first goal with a quick shot into the open corner while Jeff Parry screened the goalie and Jan Heyes made the pass after Jeff had put the puck to him in the corner. Port Hope came back with a quick goal and it looked like it might be a close game, however the 419's came out strong in the second period and . scored two more goals. Jan Heyes chalked up the first one with Dan- . PeeWees win Consolation ny Sluggett getting the assist. Then Brett Puckrin picked up a great pass from teammate Jason Cochrane, rushed in and shot high into the top corner of the Port Hope net In the final period Jan Heyes scored again for Port with the assists to Danny Sluggett and Jason Cochrane. Steve Staniland caught the goalie unaware when he went around their net and then slipped one into the corner of the pet. Brett Puckrin assisted on the goal. Steve Laird made a breakaway and out- maneuvered the Port Hope defense to fire one high over the goalie. Jason Cochrane and Brett Puckrin picked up assists on the goal. Steve Staniland picked up Port's final goal with the assists from Danny Slug- gett and Brett Puckrin. Danny Slug- gett played an excellent game and was awarded the MVP for his efforts. - The goalies, Shawn Larocque and Brian Madill played well throughout the tournament.
