In 1986 one-million dollars The Metropolitan Toronto Police Association is once again pleased to present its 68th Annual Concert featuring four top country and western entertainers on Friday, April 3, 1987 at 7:30 p.m. at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto. This is the 10th Anniversary of our show in which all the proceeds are forward- ed to the Hugh MacMillan Medical Centre. Since 1977, a total of $340,000.00 has been donated. In 1977, the Mobility and Maintenance Program, with the sponsorship of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Association, was established to provide modifications and maintenance of electric wheelchair driving controls for young people unable to operate regular commercially available controls. As the team gained ex- perience in modifying the conven- tional: controls, more and more young people, who previously depended on others to transport them, have been able to experience the joy of independent mobility. For some young people! though, controls could not be modified suf- ficiently. for them to drive an elec- tric wheelchair. The staff have met this challenge by developing special >a worth of research projects had to be turned down due to the lack of funds. Somewhere in those projects could have been the control or cure for Cystic Fibrosis so desperately need- ed. Canadian patients realize the highest survival rate of any country in the world, due to the high caliber of our dedicated medical people and high standard of patient care. This does not, however, erase the fact the median life expectancy today is on- ly age 23. Garth Edwards, coordinator for 'the dance, knows it will be another sellout as in past years. He reports that tickets for last years dance sold out within 40 minutes at Iroquois Arena. For those people that have electronic controls, or interfaces, to utilize and optimize available physical ability, not only to drive a wheelchair, but to operate com- puters and communication aids for the non-speaking person.' The Program has expanded from 1977, when Mr. Ed Snell started the one-man shop, to now include three additional people, Mr. Harold Lambert, Mr. Jerzy Antczak and Ms. Henny Maxted. With the ever increasing needs of the physically handicapped, the Program will no doubt be further expanded in the - future.
