A team of curlers thrown together at the last moment, to fill in for an out-of-town rink who had to cancel, emerged victorious at last Saturday's Lake Scugog Lumber Bonspiel. The rink, skip- ped by Paul Griffen won the spiel over 16 teams {iE entered. Goreski overpowers Utica The first game of the best of three finals between Utica and Goreskis wasn't even close as Goreskis came out on top of a 7-1 final. Utica missed two good chances in the first as they fired both over the top of the net allowing Goreskis a 2-1 lead at the buzzer. Dave Dickson got both tallies for Goreskis from Ed Sexton and Tom Powell with the Down brothers, Bill and Chester replying for Utica. The second was all Goreskis as SAVE UP TO they walked away with an addi- tional five markers. Dickson set up Sexton on the first shift of the second half to get the ball rolling. Ken Fraser then set up Dickson for his hat trick with Danny Taylor and Bruce Woodrow hooking up for goal number five. The final two went to Dickson from Sexton and Mark Lee from Powell. First off is Emmersons at 9: 00 p.m. Friday in Lefroy. At midnight Utica and Blackstock hook up in the elite division at Lefroy. Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. in Lefroy Oddfellows take to the ice followed by Goreskis at 7:00. The finals in league play will take a break this week, but will resume at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday March 15. Hastings defeats Petites The Petite C team started the playoffs by playing in Hastings on * Sunday afternoon. The hard- working, hard-checking team from Hastings defeated our girls 14 to 6, with one of their players scoring 11 goals, 5 of them unassisted. Despite an excellent effort the Port Perry team could not over- come such a powerhouse. Amanda Webb scored twice and earned one assist; Valerie Payne scored twice; Leea Kinnunen and Brandy Harris also scored and Vanessa Mumford assisted on three goals. Oshawa ~ 725-5181 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 3, 1987 -- 29 Port Perry nips opponents 4-3 On Monday February 23, 1987 the Oshawa team visited Port Perry and played two games against the seniors. Mary Rose Tang scored two quick goals in the final minutes of the game for the Port Perry Maple Leafs to tie the garfie at 4. Christina " Connell and Scott Prechitko each got one goal to finish off the scoring for the Leafs. Scoring for Oshawa, were Tyler Pitcher with 2 and Regan Syrett and Blair Wood with 1 each. In the second game, Port Perry Oilers beat the Oshawa team by a score of 4 to 3. Scoring for the Oilers were Mike Tripp with 2 and Sean Sauter and Kevin Pearce with 1 each. Regan Syrett scored 2 goals for Oshawa while Tim Wherry got the other goal. In Blackstock on the 24th the junior team of the Fire Balls and Jets beat the Flyers and North Stars by a score of 6 to 3. For Fire Balls and Jets from Port Perry, Steven Lawrence, Cameron Flieler, Brad Howcroft,; Jeremy Gibson, Jeff Whitfield and David Clouthier each scored one goal. For Blackstock, Ryan Peter scored 2 goals and Eric Russell with 1. : In the seniors the Blackstock Bruins beat the Oshawa team by a score of 9 to 6. Martin Stubbs got the hat trick for the Bruins while Jay Buma scored 2 and Jason Cliff, Mike Hepburn, Peter Simms and Mike Leach each got 1. Scoring for Oshawa were Blair Wood and Regan Syrett with 2 each and singles went to Tyler Pitcher and Tim Wherry. In the second game, the Cart- wright Canadians outplayed the Oshawa team and won by a score of 5 to 1. Chris Chorostecki scored 4 goals for the Canadians while Bren- don Agnew got one. The lone goal for Oshawa was | scored by Tyler Pitcher. On March 2, 1987, the Blackstock Juniors will play the Green Machine -- Black Hawks at R.H. Cornish while the Seniors from Blackstock will travel to Oshawa on March 3. Little guys improving For the last two weeks, the first year tykes have shown stronger hockey skills. Skating, puck control - and stickhandling are increasingly better, as the end of the season f ast approaches. Special mention goes to Brad Beenen, Greg Bruton, David Gainey, Keith Hancock and Adam Hobbs of the Dowson Red & White Team; Troy Campbell, Scott Harper, Ian Parliament and Jonathan Chambers of the Gord 'Lewis Team; Bryan Biffin, Jeff Mullin, and Jeff Piersma of the Blackstock Antenna Team; Jeremy Heyworth, Colin Mark and Justin McQuade of the Scugog Overhead Doors Team. Shut-out for Petite C The Petite C's defeated the Bob- caygeon team in Bobcaygeon last Wednesday evening. Goalie Sarah Coyne played very well 'and earned her shut-out, the final score was 5-0 for Port Perry. Good defensive teamwork by Sara Wanamaker, Katherine Ellis, Vicki Stainton and Brandy Harris con- tributed to the victory. Four goals were scored by Valarie Payne, one goal by teh Kinnunen and one assist by Melissa Pereman also helped the team to this vic- torious end to regular season play for the Petites. - The next big game will be the - Ringette Moms vs. Daughters game next Sunday! That should be great fun for all involved. Does that mean the Dads have to tighten all those skates? Denna hits 100 by Janice Lovering On Sat. Feb. 28th the Bruton's IDA Petites travelled to Markham for the final league game of the season. Port struck early and put two quick goals past Markham"s goalie. Markham came back strong with 3 "unassured goals before Port netted another for a 3-3 tie at the end of the first period. The second period saw Port come out flat and watch Markham take the lead until the final buzzer. Port had numerous power plays during the game, but didn't capitalize on most of these op- portunities. Without a few excep On Sunday, February 15 the Port Perry Sportsland Juniors faced off against the squad from Whitby This was a very exciting close checking game with the play moving from end to end very quickly Terry Childs played an excellent game between the pipes and kept the Whitby girls baffled with many good saves The first period stayed scoreless until with only 2 minutes left Whit by stole the ring in our zone and quickly tucked it in the net tions the girls all around effort wasn't in the game in this 8-4 loss against Markham. ; The highlight of the game was Denna Lovering netting 4 goals for her 100th of the season and leading the Petite B's in scoring. Assists in this game went to Tanya Towns 2; Kelly Menzjes 1; Chrissy Hickén 1; Michelle Fitzpatrick 1 and Shannon Fox 1.. The girls have to realize that the "Provincial"s don't start until April 'and whether it be a practice or game situation, we need a total ef- fort from all the team members" Whitby wins 3-1 Whitby again scored in the second before Sherry Harris from Kelly Calloway and Rachel Traynor scored to cut Whitby's lead to 2-1 The ¢tomeback effort went as the Whitby squad took a 3-1 lead by scoring a short handed marker This brings the regular season to an end and we wait to see when the playoffs start -
