February 24, 1987 -- 9 Consultants bring back report (from page 1) full-time, professional director of - recreation. "We feel quite strongly about this," Mr. McQuaig said last Thurs- day evening. He said it is very important that the person hired for this position is a trained professional in recreation with emphasis on the development of programs, the ability to work with volunteer groups.and with a com- plete understanding of recreation facilities. The other major **high priority" suggestion in the study is the start of development of Scugog Centre around the Arena. The Township - now owns some 60 acres of land " around the Arena, and the con- sultants say the first step in the long term development of this area is the _ preparation of a detailed site plan, including engineering, grading, soil testing, facility identification to determine if it is feasible and possi- ble to develop this area as a major recreation site. The estimated cost of this feasibility-site plan examina- tion is $30,000, and if the council agrees to go ahead, it could be com- pleted by early summer. Over the long term, the con- sultants envisage that Scugog Cen- tre would be the site for a new swim- ming pool, banquet hall, second ice pad, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, jogging tracks and the new location for the Port Perry Fair complete with race track and horse barns;if they are financially viable. Commenting on the recommenda- tion which suggests Blackstock Arena be closed when it needs ma- jor expenditures, Mr. McQuaig ad- imitted that this item gave the con- sultants 'the most difficulty of all the recommendations in the study." "It will obviously be controver- sial,"" he added. The study notes that the Blackstock Arena is *'considerably under-sized" and with one brick wall right next to the boards, there could be safety problems. **The cost to enlarge the structure and im- prove it (as an Arena) would be pro- hibitive," the study says. However, the consultants go on to say that the ice at Blackstock Arena is of good quality and for such things as curling, figure skating, recrea- tional hockey and public skating, the facility should be useful for some time. } The study also recommends that 'the Township consider spending money to put up outdoor rinks in any of the Scugég communities which express an interest. Other suggestions made by the Kidney foundation up for fundraising plans The Kidney Foundation of Ontario will be starting its annual fund- raising canvass in March, and Scugog campaign co-ordinator Elaine Heyes says more volunteers are needed to assist with the canvass. Mrs. Heyes said last year the can- vass raised about $2,000 in Scugog and she hopes the figure this year will be higher. She has about 30 volunteers lined up for the door to door canvass, but would like to get another 20, especially for certain areas of the Township. Canvassers are needed in Nestleton, Seagrave, Prince Albert and Caesarea, and for the residen- tial areas close to the downtown business section of Port Perry. A canvasser will be asked to call on about 20 homes, says Mrs. Heyes. Anyone interested in volunteering some time for this door to door can- vass for the Kidney Foundation is asked to get in touch with Mrs. Heyes at 986-5152 in Blackstock.
