I want to walk into the 'place and I want visitors who want to see me enough to walk in. oo I don't mind being close to shopping if you mean one little country store that stocks scythes, coal oil lamps, and fly paper, and is presided over by a shy 'couple who peer at me over coils of binder twine. I'll ~~ make out all right for provisions as long as 1 have an old- fashioned ice-box to keep the squirrels away and a spring where I can cool my milk and butter. I don't want deliveries.. I want to walk a half-mile or so through hot fields waist-deep in timothy and grass to get milk from a neighbouring farmer so that, while he's getting it, I can stand in his farmhouse wat- ching the oats wave outside the kitchen window, counting this year's crop of kittens and listen- ing to the silence. I'd like a cottage with a wood mouse or two living in it, and maybe a porcupine working on my woodwork, and a family of barn swallows in the gables and perhaps a skunk living near by just to keep me on my toes. I'm not one of those people who think skunks are just another form of guided missile, and I like to get a distant whiff of them on a chilly night j in August when they're just going around peaceably being skunks. I'm not interested in your cot- tage if you've got rid of all the animals by putting in concrete driveways, pools, patios, boathouses or concrete block - back rooms with names like The Quarter Deck. There's a misguided notion about cottages these days that was summed up for me by a chap who said, 'You don't have to be uncomfortable to enjoy a cottage. You can appreciate nature just by looking at it." As a ~ matter of fact, you can't. You appreciate nature; or anything else, by becoming involved with it. We used to say back when a few people had them, "What's the -point in going to a cottage if you're going to live the same way as you do in the city?" In those days, people at a cot- tage gradually relaxed and un- folded like swamp marigolds, and had sing-songs and corn ' roasts 'and 'revealed un- suspected sides of their character. Like old grand- fathers brought out guitars and sang ribald songs of their boyhood -- and their daughters put hands over the children's ears and tried to get everyone talking at once. A cottage was a test of character where you ~ could find out who your friends were and who were what we us- ed to call 'good sports." People kidded their guest when they slipped for the first time into those cottage beds that felt as if you were slipping into a nest of padded roots instead. But it was all wholesome fun without the aid of city inconve- niences. It was what we meant by enjoying a complete change, 'and a few weeks of it lasted you until the following Spring. For 'days after you came home you went around turning on taps and switching on lights and exclaim- ing over the wonders of civiliza- tion. But you knew you had been to a cottage. And unless your cottage of- fers the same kind of ex- perience, there's no point in you writing and including a little map and telling me that you're the eighth cottage with a blue roof after you pass the bowling alley and that I can't miss it ...... I Can. On Valentines Day, February 14th, Burns Church School are spon- soring a bowling night at County Bowl, Byron St. N. Whitby. Rev. Bulmer delivered a very inspiring message titled '"The Divine Surprises." God often turns the ordinary things in our lives into unusual blessings. If we fill our hours with regrets over the failure of yesterday and with Worries over the problems of tomorrow, we have no today in which to be thankful. No sweet deal by Scott Fennell, M.P. Much has been in the papers as of late concerning the closure of the Cadbury Chocolate Plant in Whitby. It is well known that Cadbury's sold the plant to William Neilsen Ltd, who in turn intends to close the operation, thereby putting approx- imately 400 Cadbury employees our of work. This is not an unusual occurance by big business; taking over the competition and putting them out of business - this episode being one of the more effective means of achiev- _ing this end. Unfortunately, it is not manage- ment of Cadbury's that is hurt - it is the 400 employees that are given the shocking news that they will no "longer have steady employment in _the near future. When you are try- "ing to support a family, this news can be devastating. In the end, a closure ofthis type effects each and €veryone of us since it means more Canadians become unemployed and having, through no fault of their own, to app- ly for Unemployment Insurance benefits; it leaves a modern, effi- cient operating plant empty and unused. This doesn't appear to me to be proper business practice. This scenario truly demonstrates the need for effective Competition regulations, and for this reason, this government has 'already drafted and passed legislation that will give consumers meaninfgul protection; protection for businesses, par- ticularly small. businesses from dominant firms that abuse their market power. This government in- tended, by establishing the Cana- dian Competition Tribunal, to have "ane create an office that would sole- ly review sales of this type. The . Tribunal is présently reviewing the Cadbury sale; the investigation was initiated on January 14th, when the announcement was made Db) William Neilsen's Ltd., and is in the preliminary stages at the moment Scott Fennell is the Member of Parliament for the Riding of Ontario.
