This tour- nament is hosted by the Peter- borough Community Church Hockey League and is presently noted as the largest Atom tourna- ment in the world consisting of 92 teams playing hockey in 9 different arenas. The Malmont Atoms played steady hockey in their division and managed to play in 4 games before being eliminated by a fine Oshawa team by a close score of 2-1 in the Consolation Semi Quarter Finals. Game No.1 The Port Perry Atoms opened the tournament by playing the Oshawa LNHL Black Hawks and skated to a close 3-1 victory. Scoring for the Green Machine in the first period was Duane Empringham assisted by Scott Heasman and Gavin Cochrane. The second goal was scored by Sean McEnaney assisted by Jeff Andrews and Jeff Card. In the second period David Pashley netted the only goal of the period assisted by Steve Desautels and Mike Sluggett. The third period saw the Black Hawks net their only goal of the game as the Malmont Farm Atoms held onto a 3-1 victory. Game No.2 This game saw:the Port Atoms face a tough club from Valley East (Sudbury). This club proved they Juveniles blitz 7-2 On Thurs. Jan. 22, Port Perry Juveniles met the Baltimore- Cobourg Juveniles in what was a 'must win" game for Port Perry. The first and second periods featured solid body-checking and stellar goaltending with Port' dominating physically and Baltimore having the edge i in scor- ing chances. Trailing 2 to 1 after two periods Port Perry unleashed an all out blitz on the ? Bajiimare goal. The Port of- fence fired twenty shots on the Baltimore goal, scoring six times while Baltimore's best efforts could only produce four shots on goal. The final score was 7 to 2 for Port Perry. Rob Baker led the scoring with three goals with singles going to 'Chris Cookman, Willie Edwards, Jim White and Biff McBride. The next Juvenile home game is on Thurs. Feb. 29th at 9 o'clock against Ops-Lindsay in another "must win' situation. Atom B's hot Port Perry 5 Omemee 1 Game two of the playoffs for --Pineridge! The team was ready and wanted to avenge an earlier loss to Omemee. Game control for Port resulted from strong defensive and offensive play. The drive home was pleasant. As the first period progressed, it became only a matter of time until work would produce results. Final- Bourgeois, Joey Broadworth line combined with Dave finishing a play with a good low shot. Port exploded with a four goal second period by taking advantage of opportunities -- resulting from fast skating, forcing the play and good passing. Scott Wylie scored with Billy San- diford and Neil Mueller assisting. Then Billy Sandiford scored on a crisp shot after being beautifully set up by Neil Mueller. The hustling line of Todd Smart, Brent Harper, and Mike Williams was rewarded with Todd scoring from Mike after some . hard work along the boards by Brent. Finally Dave Bourgeois finished Ports scoring from Joey Broadworth. The defense of Misty Andrews, Robin Prentice, Cory Bricknell, Brett Lawson, Simon Traynor and -- Blair Prechitcko limited Omemee to very few scoring opportunities. - Press on Port, your playing well. Port Perry 1 Millbrook 6 Awesome! No other word describes this big, green machine from Millbrook. The Pineridge atoms agree this Millbrook team is the hardest skating, hardest shooting. and slickest team they have played or seen this year. Port accepted the challenge. With their own excellent skating, strong checking and solid defense, the game was up for grabs after two periods. Steve Gilbert who just seems to get better with each game, was outstanding in goal. Maybe it was the abundance of hockey, six games or practices in eight days or "Dave" in the olives maybe it was Millbrook's strength - probably it was both - Millbrook scored four unanswered third period 'goals to gain the 6-1 victory: Port's only goal came from a good Billy Sandiford wrist shot with the assist going to hard working Scott Wylie. The Todd Smart, Brent Harper,f and Mike Williams line as well as Chad Kearns, Joey Broad- worth and Dave Bourgeois gave a solid effort. The defense had plenty "of work and played well with Misty Andrews and Robin Prentice leading the way. Good luck Pineridge as you con- tinue the playoffs. They get anothers crack at Millbrook shortly and: & real solid effort could prove very rewarding. Port Perry 5 Orono 2 In less than twenty-four hours, Pineridge were back on the ice to take on Orono. Twenty-eight penal- ty minutes were dished out by the referee with Orono gicking up eigh- teen minutes. Port spotted Orono the first goal then came back im- pressively to get the victory. Once again, it was a total team ef- fort. Steven Stiles had a great game in goal. The defense continued their - inspired play with Cory Brickneli and steady Brett Lawson showing the-way--Onee the-forwards-found the range they got stronger and stronger. The Joey Broadworth, Chad Kearns and Dave Bourgeois Pine scored the Ports first two goals. Dave Bourgeois had a geal along with Chad Kearns. Joey Broadworth had an assist on each goal. Chad Kearns had one assist.' Scott Wylie and Billy Sandiford put on-a real display of checking, con- trol and effort. Scott scored twice and had one assist. Billy had a goal and two assists. Neil Mueller made a nice play to assist on one of Scott's goals. The round robin playoffs continue January 28 in Orono, January 30 mee visits Port Perry, January 31"in Newcastle and February 1 in Little Britain. were just a little more eager to win as they edged the Green Machine 3-2 to squeak by for the victory. In the first period Scott Heasman opened the scoring for the Malmont Atoms assisted by Duane Empringham. It wasn't until the third period that the Green Machine could find the mark again as Chad Garvock scored assisted by Jeff Andrews. This wasn't enough as the Green Machine had to be satisfied with a 3-2 loss. Game No.3 This game pitted the Malmont Atoms against a team from Goulding Park. This game proved to be a frustrating game for the Atoms PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 27, 1987 -- 27 Close but not quite for the Malmont Atoms as they tried time and time again to score but were unable to find the mark. The game ended with a 0-0 tie as the final buzzer went. Based on the win, tie & loss in the tournament the Malmont Atoms ad- vanced to the Coiisolation Semi Quarter Finals. Game No.4 Semi Quarter Final This game saw the Malmont Farm Atoms face a tough Oshawa AA Minor Club.
