The Victorian Order of Nurses is a non-profit health organization which has been providing home nur- sing care. to the citizens of the 'Durham Region since 1914. In addition to a-visiting nursing service, the Durham Region Branch provides palliative care, Friendly Visitor Program, Enterostomal Therapy Program and a Psychiatric Follow-Up Program. HISTORY OF THE VON At the Annual Meeting of the Na- tional Council of Women in 1897, the Victorian Order of Nurses, (VON Canada) was inaugurated in com- memoration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The President of the Council at the time was Lady Aberdeen, and ste was chosen President of the new Order. Lady Aberdeen had active- ly promoted visiting nursing in Bri- personal.acquaintance of Florence Nightingale, who later wrote to her in Canada; offering support and en-' couragement for the new Canadian nursing venture. Enthusiastic sup- Lady Aberdeen enlisted the help 'of Dr. Worcester, the Superinten- birthday by proclamations by all ye?' tain. It was there that she made the - port also came from such prominent dent of the District Nurses' Train- ing Institute in Waltham, Massachusetts. Dr. Worcester ex- plained the importance of VON ser- vices to large audiences in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. Lady Aber- deen also toured the country, pro: moting the VON. Miss Charlotte MacLeod, a Cana- -dian nurse at the Waltham Training School, was recruited to come to Ot- tawa and serve as the first Chief Superintendent of the VON. The Order's first 12 nurses were admit- ted- at an official ceremony in November 1897. After just five months under Miss MacLeod's direction, the Order organized a team of four nurses to accompany the Canadian Government expedi- tion to the Klondike. The first branches were organiz- ~ed in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver and Kingston. Other requests for nursing services came from remote pioneer districts in the West. To reach these areas, visiting nurses had to travel long distances on horseback and sleigh. In response to this difficult situation, the VON offered to establish cottage - hospitals. In 1898, the first hospital was opened in Regina. Lady Minto also took a personal interest in the Order. Through her successful fund raising efforts, 44 cottage hospitals were eventually established in isolated areas across the country. As the country developed, local groups assumed administrative responsibility for these hospitals. The last VON hospital was turned over to local authorities in 1924. From the 1917 Halifax Disaster and the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, through both World Wars, VON VON marks 90th birthday Canada continued to meet the challenging and changing needs of Canadians. In order to liaise mc e effective- ly with provincial governments and organizations, VON organized nro- vincially in the early 1950's. This col- lective approach has given VON a stronger voice in health care planning. VON pioneered the development of Co-ordinated Home Care Pro- grams in Canada during the 1960s and 70s. Home Care Programs pro- ved to be a realistic alternative to institutional care, and are impor- tant components of today's health care system. More recently, in response to changing community neéds, VON Canada has begun offering such in- novative services as Adult Day Care, Placement Co-ordination, Foot Care Clinics and Volunteer Visiting. In addition, visiting nurses provide such specialty services as palliative and respiratory care and enterostomal therapy. VON Canada continues to play an active and vital role in the ongoing development of Canada's health care system.
