The request to extend the offer came Monddy afterneon from the School Board delegation led by former chairman Ruth Lafarga and current chairman Susan Lawson. . Mrs. Lafarga said the Board fears that if the deadline is not ex- Parking problem ~~ (frompagel) - the Durham Region Police. Members of council want the police to start ticketing and/or towing away vehicles parked illegally and especially parked cars that are blocking a travelled portion of the road. It's a touchy issue with coun- cillors. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor stated at Monday's meeting that on the one hand, "he municipality promotes tourism and winter recreation, but on the other hand, permanent residents want action when cars and trucks are parked all over rural roads. "'It is not our (council's) respon- sibility to provide parking on all - the roads with access to the lake," said Ward 2 councillor Howard Hall. While agreeing to meet with police and by-law enforcement of- ficers, council will also approach the new owner of Westshore Marina in the Honey's Beach area to ask if he will volunteer to provide winter parking areas on turned down a request from the Hamre tended and the school site issue goes to expropriation, the Durham Board of Education could end up liable for all or any of the re location costs to move the Fair tp a new site. Mrs. Lafarga asked. that the council offer to the Fair Board should be extended beyond January 31 until the expropriation proceedings are over. Township council has offered the Fair Board $300,000 in re-location assistance plus preparation of a new site for the Fair behind Scugog Arena. But that offer expires January 31 if the Fair Board declines to break its lease for the present Fairgrounds. Councillors were very luke warm to the School Board request. "We put that (Jan. 31) deadline on the offer to the Fair Board to try to bring this issue to a conclusion," said Regional-councillor Lawrence Malcolm. - And Ward 3 councillor Don Cochrane, who is a council appoin- tee on the Fair Board, said enten- ding the offer would serve only to keep the issue simmering for another six months. The Fair Board meets this Wed- seeks Liberal banner The Chairman of the Durham nesday evening (Jan. 28) and it is expected that another vote will be held on whether to accept the Township re- location offer and surrender the lease on the present Fairgrounds. If that happens, the council's offer will stand and the Durham Board of Education will New 40 apartment plan A new set of plans for a senior citizens apartment building on Catholic Church property in Port Perry was unveiled for Township council Monday afternoon. The plans call for a 40 unit apar- tment building to be constructed on iand behind the Immaculate Con- ception Church on Highway 7A. When the proposal first came in front of council last year, it was for 28 unit single storey building. 'Fhe 40 unit building would be construc- ted on a two and three storey level. Myrna Lack, an Oshawa lawyer representing the Catholic Church in this matter, told council that Monday's meeting 'was a "preliminary one," and she requested a second meeting in several weeks time to present the final plans for the building. PORY PERRY halt the proceedings Prior to the presentation Mon- day afternoon by Mrs. Lafarga, councillors also turned down, a request that the issye be discussed "incamera."" "We want to expropriation these keep Ms. Lack told council the building would be funded through the Ontario Housing Corporation and she stressed that residents would be non-denominational. She said the Church has already received some 60 applications from seniors needing this kind of accomodation. And Ms. Lack ex- plained that the reason for 40 units, rather than the original 28, is that is just as feasible economically to put up the larger building to meet the demand. Members of council and residen- ts who live near the Church proper- ty expressed concerns over several aspects of the project, including drainage, traffic congestion, parking, and the fact -the seniors building may have to take about one-quarter -acre of land from the + parking spaces, Township stands firm on offer to Fairboard discussions in the open as much as possible," said Mayor Taylor. Following the presentation by the School Board and the rejection of the request to extend the offer, Mrs." Lafarga declined further comment on, what the Board's next step night be. adjacent school property Access to the building would be via an extension of Cedar Street which runs behind the property. There would be ten parking places designated for the 40 unit building and there would be access from the main parking lot for the church. Council was told that in total for church, school and the seniors building, there would be 122 a number that conforms to the Township by-laws. Before the project can proceed, council must re-zone the land to allow a multi-unit residential apar- tment building. A decision by the council will likely be made following the next presentation by. the Church in about six weeks. : "UXBRIDGE church * ROTOTILLERS * LAWN MOWERS -* GENERATORS * COMPRESSORS * CARPET STEAMERS * SCAFFOLDS * HEAVY EQUIPMENT Region council Health and Social Services committee has announ- ced she will seek the Liberal nomination in the provincial riding of Durham East. : Diane Hamre, an Orono resident: and a regional councillor for the last six years made the announ- cement late Monday afternoon. ~>>Nrs> Hamre is married with four children and two grand-children.
