Ie Getting through to children is what 'teacher' enjoys most by Margaret Rowland After years of being a student, 18 year old'Kimber de Haas gets to be a teacher through the co-operative education program at Port Perry High School. When Kimber, a grade 13 student learned about the program she After umpteen years of being taught, Kimber DeHaas is final-/ ly getting a chance to do a little teaching. See story for details. decided to apply for teaching. She was accepted at R.H. Cornish Public School and began the year teaching remedial math but found - that rather dull. 'It wasn't challeng- ing," she explajns. She then.switched to teaching reading, phonics, and listening skills to one to three children in '2 hour periods. "It's amazing how far behind some of them are,' says Kimber with genuine concern for the children. "I like it a lot. I have more input and I can use my own ideas." She enjoys being with children and is considering a career in teaching. What she enjoys most about the job is when she gets through to the children she helps. She says she had trouble teaching the word "the" to one little boy, spending a day work- - ing with him. The next day he knew it right away. "It made me feel so good because I really 'did get through to him." ' The only complaint about the job she has is when some kids don't show up on time. She is generally pleased with the work she is doing. Kimber's future plans are uncer- "tain. She doesn't know what she is going to do. Even if she doesn't get into the teaching profession, she says the co-op experience will look good on her high school transcript. She may go to university for a general arts program next year or she may take a year off to travel. She jokes, 'Maybe I'll go to Europe and find myself." "The program is worthwhile," Kimber says.
