Scugog Township council has accepted an offer from the Durham Board of Education to purchase seven acres of land at the fairgrounds as the site for a new elementary school. The of- fer of $115,000 was accepted by council but was not unanimous. A 60-unit co-op housing pro- ject for Port Perry received the financial green light from the provincial and federal govern- ments. The project will be built on land east of Carnegie Street and south of Highway 7A near the Canadian Tire Store at the Port Perry Plaza. Smoking will only be allowed in one of the staff lounges and in the solarium at the south end of the hospital. John Arthur Begin was con- victed of criminal negligence causing the death of his two young children in a fire that con- sumed his home in 1984 and was sentenced to six months in jail. A 18-unit condominuim pro- ject by developer Alex Shepherd has cleared the final hurdles and construction could get underway in the very near future. He hopes that the $1.5 million project will be finished by the end of this year. APRIL 1986 Scugog Township hired a full- time by-law enforcement of- ficer. Don Intine will enforce all by-laws in the Township books. The speed limit through Utica was reduced from 80 km/hr to 70 km/hr after the organization of a petition with well over 100 names on it, demanding that the limit be lowered on Durham . Road 21. The Port Perry Goreski In- sulation Bantams won the All- Ontario Bantam hockey crown for the second straight season. The team defeated a stubborn 'Tilbury team 4-2 to take the series four games to one. Town Hall 1873 celebrated its tenth anniversary at a gala evening which featured Moe Kauffman and his Jazz Quintet. As many as 60 people from Port Perry and area, most of them children, needed anti- rabies shots after they were in contact with a rabid dog during the last week of March. The dog in question roamed throughout the Perry Glen and Cawker's Creek subdivisions. The Durham Board of Educa- tion received provincial grants for construction of a new elementary school in Port Perry. It gained approval for a construction grant of $2,062,000 plus an additional $90,000 for purchasing land for the school site. A portion of a rural conces- sion road south of Port Perry - was closed for about four hours as members of the Durham Police 'bomb squad" destroyed 21 sticks of explosive powder which were described as "too volatile and unstable' for transportation and detonation by the police disposal unit. MAY 1986 Township councillors declined to support a request from the local Chamber of Commerce to have Port Perry declared a tourist area which in turn would allow stores in the community to remain open on Sundays and statutory holidays. 'Township council trimmed $9,000 out of the 1986 budget which reduced the tax impact to the 9.6 per cent level. The Central Seven Assoqcia- tion for the Mentally Handicap- ped turned the sod to start con- struction of Carlan House on a lot immediately to the east of the Central Seven workshop on Durham Road 8. Nearly 100 ratepayers said there should be no commercial development in a proposed sub- fj division in north end Port Perry. A committee of the Durham } Board of Education approved a resolution to keep looking for a site in Port Perry for construc- tion of a new elementary school. JUNE 1986 Scugog Township council has refused to support a bid by the local Chamber of Commerce to allow any store in Port Perry to remain open on Sundays. The council voted unanimously not § , to support the request from Chamber president Peter Hvidsten.
