At Canadian Automotive Museum - Bob Verrall (right) of Rothmans presents the keys to the 1912 Rolls Royce to Automotive Museum president Keith Tregunna while Museum director Ralph Turner looks on. Ladybird, a 1912 Rolls, owned by Lady Eaton is the latest edi- tion to the fine collection of vintage cars at the Automotive Museum in Oshawa. The keys to this one of a kind auto were turned over December 18 (see story for details). Ladybird has arrived at the Cana- dian Automotive Museum, and she's here to stay. Ladybird is a vintage 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, beautifully restored to the finest detail and still running perfectly with a top speed of about 55 mph. She is the latest jewel for the Automotive Museum, located on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa, and the car will enjoy a place of honour among 80 vintage autos on display. The keys to this classic were turn- ed over to Museum President Keith Tregunna last Thursday afternoon by Bob Verrall, marketing director for Rothmans Pall Mall, the com- pany which donated the car to the Museum. The gift was described by Museum director Ralph Turner as one of the "most important ever for the Museum, just about the best Christmas present we are ever like- ly to receive." Ladybird, finished in dark green with a distinctive sloping roof-line is no ordinary 1912 Rolls Royce. It was one of three built that year for Sir John and Lady Eaton, the famous Canadian family whose name means department store. Lady Eaton christened the car Ladybird and the name has stuck ever since. The other two cars, both touring models were nick-named Bluebird and Yellowbird. Both have long since disappeared, probably to the wreckers. But Ladybird survived, though for a time this historic Canadian auto sat in a museum in Arizona, where it was purchased by the Craven Foundation in 1972 and returned to Canada. The car is a large, closed sedan, actually a "double limo," very rare and unique for that time in the - history of auto manufacturing. Ladybird saw a lot of service to the Eaton family until the 1930's when it was put into semi- retirement. Lady Eaton took a keen interest in this car and several times had it modified to suit her needs. For example, when the large tires became very hard to obtain, she had the wheels scaled down slightly so Christmas goldfish race around by Michelle Brown Gr. 4 - Prince Albert Public School Around, Around, around they race, Trough the icy water base.
