The meaningful devotional was taken by Winnifred Davison ... reading Luke I: 45-46 and told the story of Mary from "Booklet To- day" followed by prayer. During business many items were discussed and voted upon. Minutes were approved as read and the financial statement, showing a good balance to begin the New Year. The Christmas card list was revised. The romance of Christmas is obvious to most people. "It is seen in Christmas Cards. It is heard in the Christmas Carols. It is brought to mind in the story of Santa Claus and the Santa Claus Parade. It is evident in the new warmth and friendliness amongst the people one meets. It's a hap- py, jo!'y time. It even seems to transform the very facial featur sof men and women to a degree the Beauty Parlours could never attain. There is a kindness and a generosity that so often is not so prevalent at other times. People seem determined not to let the old year go without some tribute to friendship and goodwill. So we all join therefore, to some degree, in the Romance of Christmas. But what of the Reality? Some folk never get beyond the Romance. For them the whole Christmas Story belongs to the world of romance - the fairylight world - the world of Mistletoe - Christmas Crackers - Pudding and Presents - the world of a romantic holiday at the end of one year. They can believe to some degree about the Shepherd watching over their flocks - the appearance of the Angelic Choir - the Wise Men journeying in their quest for knowledge - the decree of the Emperor Augustus ordering a Census for taxes. Yes, they can believe in all of these. But what of the STAR? What of the song of the Angels? What of Christ? : Unless this world is a mad and meaningless muddle there is a Star to guide us to the fullest and most satisfying life on earth ....... and in Heaven. Unless this world is a world of chaos and disorder - there is a song to give us courage and strength. It was into such a world as this that Christ came - into the world of deepest reality with all its bruised and broken humanity - wrecked and ruined lives and broken homes - longing for someone to love them into something brighter - into being someone with a new song in their heart. The world into which Christ came was not very different from the world in which we live today with all its sordidness, sorrow, shame and inhumanity depicted for us each and every day on the T.V. What of the Prince of Peace? There are economic and other causes of war; but there are also very personal causes. There is that pride which remembers hurts and forgets benefits. There is the habit of seeking the mote in other's eyes and missing the beam in one's own. There is " the inertia which allows evil conditions to continue rather than be bothered to do anything about them. We can carry the tumult raging in our own soul into the outer world. We can fight our fellow men because we have refused to fight it out in our own heart. The only way by which peace can be found is through Christ, the Prince of Peace. The message of "Peace on earth" as revealed in the coming of Christ into our sin tormented world is still the word of eternal hope to mankind. That is why when Jesus was given the Scroll of the Prophet Isaish to read in the Synagogue at Nazareth He turned to the 61st chapter and read: 'The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath annointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the 'captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.' This was no call to revolution or protest marches. This was no call for strikes or strikers or greedy business monopolies to defy and break the law. This was the pro- clamation of Christ's programme of Redemption by which . through the power of the Gospel He would people His kingdom not with the rich - the powerful - the priviledged of this world - but with the poor - the oppressed - the han- dicapped - the wronged, who out of their very need would turn to Him and to His gracious mercy. No, the angels did not sing, as is so often quite wrongly asserted, 'Peace to all men." What they sang was 'Peace on earth to men of goodwill,' that is, to men in whom God is 'well pleased.' May you know His peace in your home - in your family - this Christmas and in the days beyond. Here's hoping Saint Nick brings you and your loved ones much luck and happiness this Christmas.
