In game one the Lakers were hard pressed to defeat the host team, Sunderland "Old Boys." Two late third period goals secured a two to one victory. Scoring for the Lakers were Denny Irvine and Steve Calder. In game two the Lakers came up against a fine team from Sutton. During this game tight checking and excellent goaltending were the order of the day. Again a late third period goal proved to be the winner in a one-nothing victory. This vic- tory assured the Lakers a position in the "A" championship final. The championship game featured great goaltending by the Lakers' goalie Bob Strickert. After a scoreless first period Bob Tarbotton put the Lakers on the score sheet with a forty foot snap shot over the opposition goalies shoulder. Sunderland really fought back to tie the game at one on a give away in 'the Lakers defensive zone. Before the end of the second period Tarbot- ton scored his second goal to give the Lakers a two-one lead. During the third period Mike Driscoll broke out of a season long scoring slump to put the Lakers in- to a three to one lead and although Sunderland scored late in the third period the Lakers were able to hang on to win the championship three to two. Players for the Lakers in this tournament were: Bob Strickert Bubba McEachern, Lee Steeves. Jody Peters, Jim Beatty, Bob Tar- botton, Steve Calder, Denzil (Bert) Irving, Larry Courtice, Ron Jeffery. This Port Perry rink skipped by Jan Towns (left) will be on its way to the second round of the Provincial Playdowns in Tren- ton, December 13 and 14. With Jan are Louise Haugen, 3rd; June Haynes, 2nd and Gwen Luke, lead. The team advanced to the se- cond round by virtue of some fine play in the opening round December 1-3 at Norwood, winning the B side in the double knock- out competition. The A side was won by Oshawa skip Peg Clemin- son. It is believed this is the first time that a team from Port Perry Curling Club has advanced to the second round in the Provincial Playdowns. We wish them good luck and good curling.
