Major TV networks, CBC, CTV and Global, as well as local TV stations along with all the major On- tario radio stations and national newspapers, covered the activities of the group as they attempted to deal with the rash of teenage deaths in alcohol-related car accidents. Since 1980, thirteen students had been killed, ten of which were alcohol-related. PPHS students organized a SADD group to prevent further drinking- driving accidents not only among the students but also with their parents. Students organized noon hour meetings and public meetings in the evenings. As a result of their energetic efforts and the accompa- nying media coverage, they were in- vited by other schools, service clubs, churches and community in- terest groups to give talks and pre- sent their student directed play "BOOZE." This play, written by the Addic- tion Research Foundation was well received in schools in the Durham Region and as far away as Aurora, Forest Hill, Peterborough and Lind- say. The play was directed and pro- duced by Mark Stokes. This Sept. a new executive took over and a new play has been developed by a new cast and directed by Max Daigle, a grade 10 student at Port Perry High School. This play received its premiere at Francis Leiberman High School in Scarborough in October. The new executive, headed by Rebecca Kahn, has visited numerous schools and community groups since Sept., giving seminars and leading discussion on the issue of drinking and driving. Last week, designated as Addic- tion Awareness week across Canada, was a busy and challenging time for the students. On Sat. Nov. 16th, Rebecca Kahn, SADD presi- dent represented Port Perry at the opening ceremonies for the weeks' activities: On Monday, six students journeyed to King City Secondary » 1 SADD is alive and doing well School north of Toronto to lead seminars on drinking and driving. On Tues. student : visited Durham College to tell their story in order to increase awareness of the problem at Community Colleges. On that same evening, the new "BOOZE"" play was presented to students at G.L. Roberts Collegiate in Oshawa. On Thurs. evening, Miss Kahn and Heather Agnew represented Durham Youth in a Forum on Youth and Alcohol at Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa. At this meeting, the Port Perry students were given praise from other schools in Durham, the Durham Police and the Attorney- General"s office. Today, Tues. Nov. 25, the SADD group from Port Perry will host students from Stouffville Secondary School in order to help them to get a program started in their school. On Wed. Nov. 26th, the play "BOOZE'"' will be presented to the students of Dunbarton High School. As a result of coverage of the Port Perry High School program in such magazines as 'Homemakers' and '""Grade," requests for information about the SADD program and how to get it organized, have been received from as far away as B.C. and Nova Scotia. Since the initiation of the SADD program a year ago, there has been a dramatic reduction in alcohol- related incidents in Scugog. Since last April there have been no in- cidents; a far cry from the frequent tragedies in the past. Most teenage parties in Scugog now involve the "designated driver" system where those who drive to events where alcohol is available, promise to refrain from any alcohol consumption for the en- tire evening in order to get their passengers home safely. The message of the SADD pro- gram is a simple one: "If you drink, don't drive," and '= the message appears to be getting through to the teenagers of Scugog. SADD president Rebecca Kahn says "The next stage is to get service clubs and other community groups of adults to organize designated drivers within their membership and make the whole idea of designated driver an expected norm in our society." > DECEMBER BUSINESS HOURS Regular Hours until December 24th, 1986.
